Please help me identify this tree. Thank you. Smooth gray bark. Not beech.

The trunk looks like musclewood, which is also called blue beech. I call it muscle beach. Can't remember the scientific name.

It looks a lot like blue beech but I also think it is American Hornbeam
The bark has a Vee init

Thank you all. After researching your suggestions im confident it is American Hornbeam aka musclewood aka blue beech.

Now to decide whether to cut it down or not.

I suspect it'll be a challenge for a saw blade.

thats blue beech its related more to hophornbeam both get called ironwood and should make great firewood
