I put mine exactly where BeGreen said to :)

I think it depends on your stove somewhat, but in many cases it seems the best spot is right on the top, a couple of inches away from the pipe. But probably you should tell us what kind of stove you have...
 
I don't have an Englander, but I'd try it centered on the top step, about midway between the flue pipe and the side edge of the stove.
