29 outside, feels like 20, going down to 20. 71 upstairs.

A properly tetrised load of red oak and two triangular white oak splits. Two short slabs on the bottom behind the coals.

Been a busy day…
Loaded up this morning before opening gifts with oak and ash. Then did a hot reload about 5 hours later with some huge knotty ash chunks before we went to my brother in laws. Got home around 5ish and then did another hot reload with some more big ash chunks/odd shaped pieces. Then spent a few hours burning down coals. Loaded all oak tonight, cold and windy, currently 20 feels like -2 with 11 for a low. First pic is this morning, last is tonight. Stuffed tonight! Draft is very strong tonight. Heated up quick with a STT of 760 and climbing 🔥.

It's 3 outside tonight with the basement starting off at 75, the living room is 69 and the sleeper is 68.

The bottom row in the wood stove is 4 splits of beech, the top row has 2 splits of ash and 2 of yellow birch.

RealFeel is -9C/15F outside
Inside, most rooms at around 11C/ 51F

1Kw/2Kw elec rads help, but they can barely keep up. Most of my rooms are around 500sqft and 2 elec rads on 1Kw either side of the room works well enough…that’s how the office is heated

We have clear blue skies and solar is certainly a boon.

First order of business was to light the Délice. I was surprised to find it still warm. Cleaned it out and there were still orange coals :-) I started burning some 3 yr white oak and the coaling lasts.

1 chestnut/ 1 white oak
Siberian elm/ Wht oak on top
Kindled with apple, Poplar, hazel

Lit right up after my customary 6 min flue pre-heat with the GHD hair dryer.

paired with the very strong draft and some nice oak, STT on last nights load creasted 800, peaking around 825STT. I think that may have been the hottest this stove has gotten. I cracked the doors couple times to bring it back down to 800 but still crept up a bit to around 815, but it was still short lived at that temperature. Probably only 20 minutes tops. Then settled around 790 and held there for a while. Rest of the stove along the front was 600 degrees, but over along the top was 790-825 at peak temperature. Hot! Never saw any glowing anywhere and no “hot stove” smell. The top plate is 5/16” steel so it’s pretty thick. Although hot, I welcomed those temps with last nights cold. House needed it even though I heat soaked the house all day yesterday. Was 13 feels like-2 at 7 this morning.

This morning was mostly oak with a little ash. Around 750 STT. Going to be very cold next few days with some snow moving in tonight. At work today so after the stove cools (unless my wife gets ambitious) the boiler will take over. Won’t be a bad thing I need to clean out some coals and ash. That has been limiting my loads the last day or so.

21 outside, feels like 10. Windy. Going to snow later today.
69 upstairs.

12.5 hr, a bit short but I could have gone an hour more. But I have to leave. Nice clean window too 😄

Some E/W splits on the bottom , some shorties N/S on top.
The. E/W ones were more brown and heavy than my red oak, and darker than the white oak I have.
Not sure what they are.
It'll burn.

Last night's low was at 7* with today's high at 17.

Throughout the day I fed the dragon cherry, ash, ad a couple splits of red maple. I mixed in some R & W oaks splits, a bit of B locust, and may have been a split or 2 of beech. Built up a substantial coal bed knowing I'm leaving tonight to plow snow. That leaves the GF to maintain the dragon, our only source of heat....and a good friend. LOL

The coal bed will ensure anything will burn. Some splits are on the higher MC side. Not horrible but could be a little drier. Some of the oaks are a bit under bowling pin sound, even though the bark is off. I've got this stuff stacked separate to air dry in the lair. GF dose not know the difference. All the mixed hardwoods are GTG. I'll show her what's what, again, before I leave. Meanwhile, I'll keep the dragon breathing heavy.

Last reload of the night, gotta get the wife’s car in the shop before the snow flies!

What a reload, while I was raking the coals to the back I bumped the refractory cover off and it fell in the coals. It’s been loose since I bought the stove and I have a stainless shim holding it up/in. I used my oven gloves and a pair of needle nose pliers to get it back in… I guess I should cement that stainless shim in!

Anyways, i got a big piece of Oak, Ash and Maple in, and few small chunks to plug holes.

That 10am load of mostly shorties is done.
It was supposed to be going up from 20 F early morning to 30 F or so all night while snowing.
But early morning it was 15 on my wildlife camera.
It got up to 26 but around 7 pm I saw 20 again.
It's 25 now.
Upstairs has been a very flat 70 F all day.

Red oak again. Splits were mostly branch wood; much bark and sapwood. And they were crooked/bendy.
So we'll see how long this one lasts

Got about 5” of the white stuff last night. Mostly before midnight. First order of business is cleaning out the stove and getting some heat going! About $15 of natural gas burned in the last 24 hours 😱. Of course it doesn’t help my wife turns the heat up more and more when I’m nit home, now it’s up to 70 lol. Gee I wonder why that is 🤔

Dug out a couple gallons of ash, wiped the glass down, loaded with oak, maple, and ash. Boiler off, stove humming along nicely warming things up.

Then snow blowed the drive way and got that cleaned up.

Slept downstairs by the stove last night. Probably reloaded it 4 times on big coal chunks. Could only get 3 splits in each time with those coals. Snow just tapering off now 10:45A. Looks like maybe 2" total of wet snow. Got the air purifier doing the blower/fan work now.

I let the stove cool off, then re-shimmed that refractory cover, it warmed up with some ash, and a piece of mystery wood; I think it was pine, while I cleared the snow.

Nice and fluffy snow here, not too bad to shovel / blow.

Shops back to 66, STT 500, CAT still sitting at 900. I’ll let it go another hr or two before I reload.

I haven’t been home since 4pm Christmas Eve, I’m having stove withdrawals 🤣 I’m outta work at 5 today it’s going to be a busy night. Stove is priority 1, then take care of 8” of snow at home while that’s getting up to temp then down to my parents to take care of the snow there.

We also left Xmas Eve afternoon and are going through fire withdrawal. We originally planned on heading home tomorrow, but with the weather system coming in we are getting on our way now to beat it home. Rain forecast overnight, changing to ice, then 6-10" of snow followed by a big temperature drop by mid week. About 3 hours to fire again!

So far this winter has demanded lots of wood.
And today may be a 1 day split volume record with the wife home and me re-loading all night and morning. The pace continues till she goes out to dinner with her friends tonight.

Will see if it's another night by the stove tonight. May be as the temps are supposed to drop pretty soon. Fine with me.

28 out, feels like 19.
This is what's left over of last night's 11 pm load. Upstairs 69, so had to increase the heat output a bit.
Raked them forward (and then pushed them 2" back from the bricks), and a split of pine on top

I have the impression that my red oak sapwood gives more ashes than its heart wood.

I know that feeling! Had my house around 77 yesterday and didn’t feel like it. Been much colder this year so far, I am also going through more wood
Burning 3 1/2 year wood this year. Burns hot with STT 600-750. 650 is my target temp.
