A few shorties on the left over coals. All red oak.
36 out now and sunny but it felt cold.
Later tonight it'll start warming up to 58 or so tomorrow. So these shorties are to get me there, after which the mini split will provide heat when needed.

The shorties are done. And tonight's low will be 32, not 35, and tomorrow will get to 45 (I think I was mistaken above with my 58 - I now presume that was 48). Anyway, I'm reloading with a full load as I won't let the stove go cold tomorrow.

Well not entirely full, some shorties and not enough thin splits to fill some gaps.

I was at work during the day so, I'm unsure what the dragon was fed today. Not super cold out but enough to keep the dragon eating.
With the sun hidden by clouds, makes one realize how wonderful radiant heat is.

Getting cold tonight, and with some winds. Been feeding the old girl B ash, red and norway maples, and both red/white oaks.
Tossed in a couple of split shorties at the base of the fire next to the coals. Good feeders for the dragon's inferno.

New member...We just took delivery of about 2 cords of Madrone rounds, cut from trees killed in the 2020 CZU fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. So for the foreseeable future it's gonna be Madrone. This batch is dry enough to split super easy and burn hot.
I have found that madrone is easiest to split when green. Then a hand ax works but when it is well seasoned, it's a bear to split without hydraulics.

I didn't burn during the two days of high winds but started today after taking out some ashes. The outside temp is around 37 tonight, the basement was 75 with the temps up here 70 & 71.

We have five splits of ash going for heat tonight.

Had decent coals for a reload this morning. Filled up Mostly ash with some maple and a little oak. Going to reach 40s today but going to drop to low 20s tonight with wind, single digit feel like temps. So going to keep the house temp up today.

I didn't look at the outside temp but my guess would be around 25 with some pretty good winds. The morning fire was yellow birch with some ash.

Up here the temps were 68 & 69, I'm not sure what the basement temp was.

Last night's 9.30 load of oak, 85% full, is done. At least I thought tso. Had a bit more coals under the ashes than I thought.
Piece of pine then on the coals.

Back home after being gone for the weekend. Quick glass cleaning and ash removal and a load of pine, aspen and 1 small stick of black ash ripping along to get above the 66 degree furnace setting. Currently 17 going down to 12 tonight. Will have a load of cherry, black ash, white ash and maybe 1 piece of something better later.

I have an almost full load of mixed hardwoods tonight👍🏼 the winds were whipping before and brought some cold air with it. Last nights remnants kicked this load off. Hope all of you had a great weekend.

Huge chunk of ash, some oak along with some smaller ash and cut offs. Big chunk of ash was awkward so tough to really stuff firebox. Cold and windy this morning 20 feels like 7. Off to work now, stove will go cold tonight.
