cleaned out some ash and cleaned the glass when I got home from work, loaded the stove to light after I got the kids home on the bus. Ash and oak this morning for a cold start. 20s with a little snow on the way this morning.
Good luck there! The next 24 hours there are going to be a little sketchy if the forecast holds true.

We've got a little snow coming today but it won't amount to much. Already 30 here.

Let the fireplace go cold overnight. Was 74 in the Great Room and 71 in the back hall. Cleaned the glass and removed some ash again this morning, pine & aspen n/s on the bottom and black ash & cherry e/w on top. Let it get good and ripping and still smoked the dang glass on the left side as I slowly closed the doors 😡. Currently 26 outside going up to 34 this afternoon.

Your pine and cherry would most likely be the smokers.

My favorite fire - Top Down.
Have not been able to do this for weeks as i've been burning 24/7 for a while now. Got single wall stove pipe thermometer to 500f in about 5 minutes. Mostly locust.

Yesterday's 8.30 pm load is done. I added 4 shorties to get me to tonight.
35 and sleet outside. Yuck.
Upstairs is a boring 70 F.

The pine is the usual culprit. The cherry generally doesn't do it too bad. Cold starts are the worst, especially when I do some e/w. As I cycle through my stacks I'm going to limit how much pine comes in for the fireplace and use it more for campfires.

36 and drizzle out going up slowly up to a high of 45 tomorrow around noon.

The 4 shorties of noon are done.

A reload of red oak shorties at 80% of the firebox volume, and one e/w in front for good measure.

I'll let the stove go cold(ish) tomorrow morning so I can have a look at the cat (I think I want to vacuum its face), and get some ashes out before we cool down to 28 or so tomorrow night.

Forgot to take a pic with the door open, and the window reflects a bit too much to see the load.

Been feeding the dragon mixed hardwoods today. About 6-8 splits this morning. Some being beefy sized as to I went to work again today.
Got home this afternoon to feed another of the same but smaller splits. Just did the same at 7 Pmish. Only this time was 5 splits with an added one of red oak for some coal accumulation. I'll keep her fed a couple more times tonight. Appetizer loads to keep out the chill.

Hoping to let the dragon go hungry tomorrow. Supposed to warm up for a day before dropping temps again. Will be bringing more splits in the lair tomorrow. The feed supply down there is getting low. Decent amount of premiums but I'm being diligent with conserving those.

Temperature ~0F (+/- 10F) since 4 December. In Anchorage so sunset at ~3.40pm. With the beautiful clear weather I get sun beaming in my S facing picture windows about 4.5 hours/day, sun at zenith is only 6 deg above horizon. But my backyard is a nice reflective shiny flat of snow and ice and then sea ice.
I’m heating 2 floors of a Lindal house = 2300 sq ft.
I fill it with birch when I go to bed and set the BK thermostatic air inlet at about 2.2. From sunset to bedtime it’s running full blast at 3 on spruce.
I put some more spruce (2-3 pieces) in when I come downstairs in the dark at ~6am, back up to about 2.5 on air inlet.
When sun rises, I put it on idle at 1.
Because of the cold snap, using more birch than usual.

This is amazingly gorgeous. Your view? Wow that sea ice, the depth to the horizon...Thanks for sharing it,

RealFeel -5C/ 23F howling winds out of outta the east
when it blows it’s cold inside here

And wind has displaced á tarp on a principle pile…I gotta go out and get firewoods today anyway to shore up the home supply

I swept on Monday, but really did not need to. Everything I’ve put in the woodburner this year has been very dry…window has stayed clean, so I’m sure I can go 8 weeks without sweeping again

Just lit off the Délice
1 chestnut/ 1 white oak
Elm/ oak/ hazel/ poplar on top and kindling
It’s not really a top down I do…it’s more like a top cigar burn and a middle kindling that keeps it going…plus, yeah, wood is dry

Ashes since yesterday morning. Looks like it will be too warm for a fire today or tomorrow. Might try to sneak in a single load tomorrow morning for the Christmas ambiance, Cold should be back by Friday.

Mostly posting due to the request for new (to us) pup by the fire. This is as close as he's gotten. He still primarily prefers curling up on the couch by my wife to get extra scratches but he's been slowly getting comfortable with laying on the floor and soaking up some warmth, be it the sun or in line with the blower on the stove.

Yes...I know...glass needs cleaning. Just been busy with prepping for the holidays.

Last nights and this morning…fell asleep before posting anything haha.

Yesterday afternoon had a smaller rager with cut offs, 790STT but short lived. That got me to overnight. Mostly oak and a little ash. Still had great coals over night. Lit the stove around 9 last night and reloaded at 9 this morning. Some ash and oak for the morning.

Merry Christmas Eve everyone

Last night's 6.30 load of oak shorties is done. 21 hrs, not too shabby for a load with a lot of space left in the firebox.

It was 35 outside for most of the time and after 11 am this morning it shot up to 42. Been very windy though.
40 now. 71 upstairs, all the time.

Cleaned out the ashes, burned my hands over the remaining coals, cleaned the window for the first time (I don't know why), and lit off the coals with 3 oak shorties and a 1.5"*1.5*piece of red cedar and a similar piece of pitch pine.

I’m 25 hours in on this load of hardwood from late yesterday afternoon. House at 71. I’ll add a few spruce before bedtime to keep her up to temp overnight.

We do have sun, tho, which helps a lot

Just lit up the Délice
Nevertheless I gotta go out collect some more firewoods today
Wind has pulled off one of my tarps and I want oak off of that pile anyway

***that was 12 hrs ago…my post didn’t go

Merry Christmas burners!

Those three shorties of 3.30 are done. A bit too far. Watched a Christmas movie with the kids, and forgot about reloading.
Just got it started on the remaining pieces of coal.
69 upstairs 34 outside.
A reload with oak shorties and one long one across on a few coals in the front.

tossed in a couple of knotty pieces (1 oak, one maple) before we went to my moms place for dinner to keep things going for tonight. Stayed later than planned on and just got the kids in bed. Got the stove loaded up before Santa comes for the overnight. Ash, oak, a piece of cherry and a few cut offs.

Merry Christmas all!

there’s no more precipitation in the forecast but no melting happening either
