[Hearth.com] What is this? Poplar? [Hearth.com] What is this? Poplar? I picked up some of this for free. I think it's Poplar. Should be ok for shoulder season or campfires.

Not poplar, with no bark and being yellow maybe mulberry or black locust?

I think the one is already "pre-charred" for ya.:p

Hard to tell without bark...yellow suggests Blk Locust,,,but who knows. Burn it.

Hmm I was thinking it was a softwood because of the loose grain...

Looks like Red Mulberry. A better pic of some bark might confirm it. Good stuff but if you get in there and stir up some half-burnt splits, be prepared for a shower of sparks and the smell of burning hair.

Yup just got some myself recently. Mulberry

I was doubting myself and checking. On the wood database there is a means of comparison.
Black locust glows under a black light. Red Mulbery does not. It was a cool video demonstration.
I cant do links from my cellphone.

Mulberry that someone rescued from the fire....looks like it has a head start on burning ;lol

It looks that way because the outside is wet. I threw a piece in the fire with some dry wood and it threw a lot of violent sparks. Lots of popping. Thats why I thought it was poplar.
