My neighbor gave me a bunch of wood, including these somewhat odd looking logs with very thick bark. Kind of difficult to get the initial split started - but once split it's pretty easy. I wonder what kind of tree it is? I've never split it before.

Looks like black locust, good score there.
 
+1 for black locust. Great burning wood - near the top with rating of 26.8 MBtu/ Cord
 
Thank you - when splitting it seemed like it would burn well. Should be good for the fall of next year.

Locust. Great firewood. Takes a long time to dry.
 
Black Locust is a new welcome addition to my supply. I do wonder, why is it called black?
