I have read lots on what types of steel to use for this. Some sya you can use galv steel some say not to. IS zinc plated ok or will galv work or should plain steel be used?

26 or 24 ga sheet steel is fine. It can be plain or galvanized. This location doesn't get hot enough for the zinc plating to be an issue.

If you're talking about blocking out the hearth opening of your fireplace, I bought a sheet of corrugated roofing at HD.

Cut it to size, sprayed it flat black, stuck some FG insulation on the back and screwed it to the fireplace with Tapcon fasteners

total cost < $35
