So I will be getting my first pellet stove very soon and installed for this upcoming winter (Harman XXV). The seller gives two free tons of New England pellets with the purchase but after that I will need pellets. Where do you guys get your pellets here in CT and who have you noticed has good prices?

I am located in Ellington which isnt too far from Springfield and western Mass also.

Thanks,

Jay

Jay, I also live in CT, I have been burning pellets all winter for the last 3 years. I have two stoves that run 24/7 all winter. Last year I purchased 5 ton from Home Depot and almost ran out. They had Team Green last year and looks to be the same this year. I have a Whitfield Advantage II Insert which does 70% of my heating duty as well as a cheaper Englander free standing unit to supplement in my large living room. Last year I paid 219 a ton. Home depot has a great price but the pellets they sell arent the best they produce a decent amount of ash so be prepared to clean bi-weekely. My father in law runs a Harmon on Home depot pellets and they burn just fine in his Harmon. Home Depot will also charge a 65 dollar delivery fee for anything up to 10 tons. this is by far the best deal out there but you get what you pay for. You will not get the most heat from the cheaper pellets and you will need to clean your stove much more frequently. Good luck this winter !

I just moved to Suffield, CT and have to get my harrmen insert installed soon as its getting cold. I am trying to figure out what to buy for pellets this year. Seems eveything is overpriced. I could do GTs again for between 259 and 286/ton with coupon from Lowes. Not a great deal. If they drop back to $5.20 a bag maybe.

www.btpellet.com has a place in suffield, called and they said they have no inventory. They have some in Suffield but just have to show up and see. Want to get something good so was thinking of getting hammers @ $300/ton. Cubex have some mixed reviews so IDK. Not sure where to get Turman.

Agway has hammers for $365/ton and I was told $299/ton was too much so...

TSC I am probably not touching with their rebranded TSC pellets that may or may not be good (last year were ok).

I am looking to buy 4 tons. Would love to get something good but just not sure the price over GTs are worth it. I mean if I can get 5 tons of GTs for same price as 4 tons of hammers then seems silly to bot go with GTs.

I have heard good things about these guys but their prices seem high http://www.ctpellet.com/

I got the Okie golds for $289 per ton they want $320 EEK

You can cross reference the bar code to see what kind they are. Last year around me they were MWP which are decent for a NE box store pellet.

great teams from Lowes? Are these any good? My inlaws just got three tons the other day...

Ya, there decent to good. Ive never had any of the best pellets so IDK. I just ordered 4 tons using 20% of coupons. 13 seperate orders.

Ya, I liked them last year but read reviews so was worried I would not know what I was getting this year.

I also purchased from BT Pellet in Bristol - good people, delivered on the date / time promised... and placed in garage exactly where I needed them!

Was that $365 per ton, or is that $365 per "skid" - ( could be 1.2 - 1.3 tons ) because that is sounding expensive for Hammers at this time of year!

(as side note... I see you are "Aviator 79"... where do you fly out of? I've been flying planes as a hobby since '98 out of DXR - 152, 172, Warrior, Archer, Arrow and a once loved Ercoupe!.... but just the Warrior now)

I order everything from CT Pellet. Mostly because they are nice and easy and even delivered to my house the day after a blizzard. I get the best prices out of them by ordering as much as I need during their spring sale. Good discounts, and you can then choose your delivery date. Mine just came. Also, they will split delivery charge with anyone on your street who also orders, I split with the neighbor and 3 tons were delivered for $30.

I buy Envi-blocks for a wood stove so how good any of the pellets are I can't answer, but my neighbor loves the Hamer's hot ones best.

I put in an order for 2 tons of Okanagan's last week for $319/ton from CT Pellets. Won't be delivered until the 30th. Delivery was a bit steep since I'm a bit out of their normal range, but its my first year with the stove and I've heard good things about Okanagan's and they seem to be the only ones with them still in stock.

You realize you could burn oil at that price and basically have it cost the same. Just saw a oil truck go by me for $3.04.

For me, oil would have to drop to $2.00 per gallon or pellets would have to surpass $500 per ton for oil to be more economical.

Sounds like you need a new central heating system. A BTU is a BTU regardless of where it comes from. A ton of pellets at $340 is equivalent to about $3.05 oil. Of course if your distribution system sucks and your furnace/boiler is old anything can cost more.

Right now oil near me is $3.20/gal and it's only going to go up. This is going to be my first winter with the stove and I'm still trying to feel out how much I can possibly expect from it. I have a 2,400 sq ft cape that has an open floor plan and is well insulated. We went with a Quadra-Fire 1200i so heating the entire house may be a bit unrealistic (even though from what I have read it may be possible).

My plan is to use the pellets mainly when the price of oil is up around $3.80-$4/gal (usually around January/February time frame) and use oil in the shoulder months (at least for this first year with the stove). Next year I will get them sooner so I can get a better price an if the stove can heat the entire house then I'll order a bigger quantity. I didn't do that this year because I wasn't sure if I was going to get the stove.

From what I have read, for 1 million BTUs, a price of $250/ton of pellets is equivalent to $2.02/gal of oil. I may have paid a little more this year, but if the house is more comfortable and I wind up paying the same amount I would have paid for oil then, at least in my head, its a win for me and a good learning experience for next year.

Find some Stove Chow or Fireside Ultra's from home depot, there cheap and burn hot, esp FSU, bought FSU at HD in westfield last year, Enfield HD has/had north americans which last year were garbage, there $239 a ton and say you have a Lowes card and get %5 off.
