We had a lot of extra food at work last week. The sweets won out over the large box of bagels that have become dried and hard. A vendor brought them in, likely in hopes people would take the more healthy option. So I took them home tossing a few in the back yard each day, for the deer. I found one of them in a tree this afternoon ..............

Looks like my backyard.Year round I put out old dried bread,flour tortillas,stale popcorn,crackers,pizza crust & a few cookies.Birds & especially the Fox Squirrels & Chipmunks love them.

Later, this little guy ran towards a large pin oak, got up on a wood sided trailer and tried to jump for for the pin oak. The added payload messed'm up so he missed the tree. We last saw him carrying the bagel up in that tree but was too far away to take another picture.
We have lots of other wildlife too. Haven't had any red foxes for a few years though. Several were raised in what is now the old wood shed. Last winter I found a possum curled up under the firewood support boards in a pile of leaves. I was re-stacking wood when I saw the white hair in late January. A couple pokes with a stick revealed it was completely frozen solid (or else he plays dead better than the others I've found back there)
A stray cat must be eating some of the scraps we toss out there because it's getting fat! I've had large snapping turtles walk up from the creek. Twice we've had turkeys roosting in a walnut tree, never figured out what was going on with that.

Ha, funny you should post that. I took this shot through the dining room window of a grey squirrel stuffing himself on hawthorn berries this morning. They are newcombers here and not really welcome because they crowd out the native, smaller, douglas squirrels.

The birds really like the hawthorn too. It provides protection from the local raptors and is close to the feeder.

Around here the deer are a lot bigger, and they don't climb trees. Jes' sayin' ..........
