Has anyone had any experience selling woodturning stock? I see English Walnut, 2"X30" gunstock blanks on Ebay, $300. 6"X6"X13-1/2" spindles,$19.99. I know nothing about it, but I would like to see if any iof my revcently scored walnut is worth more than just firewood Optimized-walnut.jpg ust firewood.

I don't sell but I buy stock. A few people locally sell them on CL. They cut the pieces with a chainsaw into bowl sized blanks and seal them up with anchorseal to prevent cracking. It may have to sit a while, but you could put some aside and see what happens. My carving wood supplier is a tree cutter, so he has a bit of knowledge in drying times and what people are looking for. He sells his blanks from $5 - $20 for smaller ones, depending on the species and figure of the grain. I don't have much access to nice tree species for carving wood, so I tend to buy several pieces at one time and price it as a bundle. Tree guys gets handful of cash, I get a good amount of stock.

I watch CL almost daily for the occasional scrounge. Late April & early May grabbed some large very nice Black Cherry & Honey Locust, respectively.September 2010 on there someone had very nice Black Walnut (almost 3 truckloads) just a few blocks from my house.Already cut to rough lengh, was brought down in storm a few months earlier.March 2011 grabbed some large Eastern Red Cedar on north side of town.

I rough mill them to random sizes freehand with chainsaw longer pieces over 3 feet I set up the Alaskan mill, finish them up on Delta heavy duty bandsaw w/ riser block & 1 1/2HP motor. Can handle 12 1/2" thick material if I dont force it.Ends are squared up,coated with Anchorseal & stored inside out of the sunlight for a few months.Keep some for future use, sell remainder as green turning/carving blocks on Ebay/Craigslist.
