Wind storm knocked down a few years of firewood up the mountain... I have no reason to be bored in the near future.
I have a bunch of unsplit rounds, green Douglas Fir, there must be truth to them being easier to split frozen? How cold for how long do we figure to take advantage of easier frozen splitting?
Still really waiting for our first real freeze.🫤
...Yes split by hand...

Got out for some "chainsaw therapy" this weekend. Dead standing oak and elm.

We have a day of rain and strong winds starting tomorrow then cold. I cleaned the basement stove out and filled the garage back up with some locust and cut kindling for the coming weather.

Went and checked out an ad for some free wood, which I was unsure what it is (still not 100% sure even after seeing it in person) but found some great oak sitting in the pile…all free. Arborist also said he has another tree yet to be felled to do and I’m welcome to that. Still some more oak left…which he is putting aside for me. Nice guy. Total here probably 2.5-3 cords of wood. All free.

Went and grabbed the rest of the oak. He also has a cherry tree (I think, sample photos below) he’s taking down later this week, he said I’m welcome to it all free too.

This oak cost me a chain on the last log of course. Big piece of metal about 2” under the bark…oh well, still worth $40 bucks and a 2 tank fulls of gas on the saw.

I’ll start splitting this later this week, or next. Far too muddy and wet today. 50 degrees with snow on the ground.

From famine to feast, it always seems to work out. Make sure you get that tree guys number!

Funny how that works! Yup! Already did! He also has mine, and has other jobs in the area scheduled. He’s not local, from Westport mass. Not sure how he got all the work near me? Pretty much All the tree companies that are RI based don’t do this. I haven’t found one anyway.

Glad I didn’t buy any wood yet this year. Might have a steady supply when I want it now, all free

Do get them a "Christmas gift" now. It'll only help you in future interactions.

He also can probably tell you the species of the wood you're questioning. If he's an arborist he should be able to.

The neighbor down the street had a tree come down across his driveway about 6 weeks ago. Just the top 7 or 8 feet was on his drive. His chainsaw was not working so he cut that part by hand and stacked along the road.. I saw it and asked if I could take the wood and he said sure, and if you want to cut up the rest of the tree you can take that too. Well you don't need to ask me twice. Finally got the chance to go over there and buck it up. It was in a gully so the top part was holding it up. As I cut it up it dropped and rested on some huge rocks.. Good thing for the wedges, I was able to slip them between the rocks and tree to get clearance. Heavy duty workout hauling the rounds out of the gully. Hope to be splitting soon if the weather cooperates.

Nice and straight.
But what tree was that? Thick sapwood and green heart...
