I stacked the rest of that beech today, sort of haphazardly; then started a stack right against it to help wedge it up.

I also spent way too long noodling / splitting a few big knotted pieces I had … I have 1 left, debating rolling into a ditch and forgetting about it though🤣🤣. It’s oak… so I’ll probably force myself to noodle / split it.

Those pieces burn a LONG time they are very dense!

It’s going to make my back and shoulders dense cutting it up!🤣🤣🤣

I’ll probably end up quartering it with the chainsaw, then splitting it after I catch up on splitting the rest of the easy stuff; then I’ll toss on top of the stacks.

I don’t waste my time trying to split those. Just cut it how you want with the saw.

I saw one of the adult bugs in this Ash when I was loading it. It looked like a yellow jacket, but it was a fly not a bee. I've seen it before. And this wood is wet (I thought it was dry). That's probably why there are live bugs coming out of it and grubs inside of it. I've never seen wood this chewed up - there is loads of sawdust.

I am in South Dakota and we have what you are talking about (I think). It is called "Pigeon Tremex Horntail". It is a type of non-stinging wasp, known as a horntail. They are large insects, with tubular shaped body and generally brown color, marked with yellow.(google search results)

They bore into the tree and can leave a hole about the size of a person's finger. I believe they have a three year "baby" stage and live in the tree. You would have to spray the tree 3 years or more in a row in order to control them. The bore holes are so large it will make some trees break and fall over.

That is it. I saw another one yesterday. Thanks. The holes are all over the outer layer (cambium?). I guess the green bug isn't the only bug that likes to dine on Ash.

Out this AM to process some more Ash. It was a noodle-rama. I noodled the big rounds into 6 pieces - no sense in fighting those big hardwood quarters. That trunk has to be 40". I'm not use to wood this big. I'll do a little more cutting and load it tomorrow. Before pic, midway and towards the end picture.

I've added a dog/wood carrier to the toolbox, It is small, but a bunch of small loads/dog exercise sounds appealing. I guess it would pull my little trailer if needed as well, but the wood is all uphill from here. I just couldn't justify the price of something newer and bigger!

Just curious what type of camera you use? It has a unique “hue” to all your pictures.

It is just an old cell phone. This AM, I grabbed the load I started yesterday. The owner pulled some logs out of the pile which made things easier. One more possible load if the owner pulls out 3 or 4 logs from the dirt bank/pile. Time to get splitting (tomorrow probably). This is the most Ash I've ever obtained.

I came home one day recently and found four piles in the small wood shed dumped out on the lawn.
Found bear droppings in front of the shed. Not sure if the bear dumped it or not.
Got it restacked now

It must be the bears knocking over my sketchy piles, they must wait till they're leaning good then come in to finish em off!

I'm impressed by how much my firewood piles shrink during summer (drying), piles that I know I stacked as high as I could are shrunk down at least 6" now (8ish' tall). The bears probably see that opportunity as well...

I see there is lots of good wood to be had in your area. I lived in BC awhile back, and miss it. BTW, your dog seems so serious...what is he trying to say to us? "Look how good I am"?

Ha! I think he is pretty protective of his new ride!
Lots of wood here, needs to be dead to cut for wood though (as I like the live ones on our property). There's enough dead stuff around, just have to make sure that I don't pass them up and let them rot, beetles and grubs will get them.

So yesterday I took another load of brush to the township brush pile and saw a whole tree not too badly buried. It looked like hardwood and likely oak. I got permission to pull it out, so today I took another load of brush over and my saw. It was oak, 13" base still attached to the root ball, 50-60' long.

Pole shed clearing and cleanup is done except for I still have to finish removing the 15' tall 2" dia oak that I'm going to transplant. I have a big trench dug around it and will try to pop it out with the skidloader this afternoon. Site work supposedly is going to be tomorrow.

Danged deer flies are getting worse if anything.

the way I had a lot of my wood stacked bothered me. Kept collecting water on the tarps, wood kept sliding off from poor stacking, very uneven, so I decided to restock some and consolidate. I’ll eventually do the other stacks but 3 big stacks is enough for now. Been at it for a while. Got rid of 4 tarps and 2 and a half pallets from consolidating. Before and after.

For the heck of it checked some MC of various pieces.

Edit. Got a second wind and restacked one more big one ~about 1.5 cords. Consolidated by adding a 1/2+ cord of hickory to this that I had stacked with pine. That’s ready to burn too.

2 year hickory - 16%
2 year ash - 15%
2 year oak - 18%
1 year oak - 25%
1 year mulberry - 19%

All taken on fresh split surfaces. Lots of wood available for the winter.

Total inventory about 11 cords not including the pine.

This red oak snapped it's top in Helene. I voted let it stand.

See the little Wee Man in the bucket? ^ He's about 60' up.

This saw didn't care, it's a Honey Badger....it's don't give a #!@$!@..

I added the roller tip Holzfforma 24" bar pictured...

But i cut all of it with the OEM Chinese butter chain!

The second tank of fuel i cut up the trunk of the OTHER red oak taken down by this crew, AND the White Oak 40" thick from last autumn with 20' of log laying, still.

Finally, I headed up to the fallen White Pines from Helene, and i ripped one 50' tree into blocks, and dropped half dozen rounds from the second before i mercifully ran fuel tank dry...

Saw was ran for the first time today. Started pull #6. Ran clean, idled well, pulled strong.
Started when hot, running 32:1 non eth.

it just cut.

So, I cut with anger of being outvoted 1-1.

Css'd the oak I pulled out of the township brush pile this morning before it got too hot. Between that and the other oak logs I had previously pulled out it works out to just over 1/4 cord.
