he bought a house with regency zc insert,but it's built in the wall like a normal zc fireplace.bit worried on clearences to combustibles.this thing puts out some serious heat

ZC insert installations can be built into the wall. That's why they are called ZC because, due to the casing design, require no or very small clearances to combustibles.
 
well he had the same people that installed it come and give it a tune up he kept finding pieces that previous owner uninstalled to make it fit,don't ask me lol insurance signed of on it

Get someone else in to inspect it

It would be best for your cousin to log in here and post about his installation including some pictures. We need to see what is in there before giving out advice. It may be an insert installed in a ZC fireplace.
