A bit of catalytic stove history - Concorde Catalytic

I was there - selling some of the first ones!

Loved it. What a kick way back then to hear about stoves which would burn cleaner!

That Concorde is a neat looking stove.

Back in the early 80's nobody even thought about stoves burning clean or efficiently.

I think if I had a stove without a catalytic converter it would feel like 1/2 my stove was somehow missing!

We bought out VC defiant encore in 1989 and just rebuilt it. The old fire back was stamped 1987.Still love the stove even if outdated.
Keeps the 4 bedroom colonial nice and warm.

That's a nice piece of history. The stove is quite contemporary looking. I like its Prairie School Design.

My guess is a few thousands - probably a few here and there still burning! It was built very solidly and the cat was a standard 6" round.

It was not a slow burner as they had not worked out that part of the technology. With the elevated grate and lots of air coming in around the doors (hard to gasket right), overnight burns were tough. But it was great looking down through the little sight glass on the top and seeing the cat glow.

It wasn't too long afterwards that the maker, Scandia, was driven out of business by the trademark lawsuits brought by Jotul and VC against their copies....or at least that's my educated guess as to why they went under. They also made an insert version of the Concorde which was defective and barely heated at all....I got stuck with a whole trailer load of them and couldn't sell them. I recouped a few dollars over the years robbing them of parts (same doors and glass).
