The Ashford has been burning great with no smoke after the cat is engaged but cleaning the fly ash off this morning it looks like the cumbustor is separating from the case - is that normal after one year? Thanks for you help.

I suspect it's not normal as it provides a path for smoke to go around (of a similar size as the gasket is supposed to stop).

My cat doesn't show this.

Dealer is shipping new combustor under warranty. Noticed a little more smoke is escaping now until the load is burned down longer - could I fill the gap on the side with gasket material to keep this cat going a little more? I hate to toss it if it still has life left.
 
I think you can try that. I think it's too wide though; the gasket swells up and desintegrates. It'll stay put around the cat frame but this gap is so large it may just sag down. Doesn't hurt to try.
