Hi all I have a vermont casting aspen C3 woodstove that I bought a year old in 2022. The past couple months stove top temperatures have been getting as high as 900f every burn. I have checked that the damper is closing. This seems very hot to me. Any suggestions?

The first suspect is an inaccurate thermometer though the cookplate will be hotter. If you put the other thermometer there what does it read?

One tip is not to wait a couple months if you’re seeing temps this high. Hopefully it is the gauge but you want to get a solution for something like this right away. I bought an IR gun for ~$60 that’s reliable. I’ve tested every conceivable object in my house including all humans and pets! 😂

I have checked with a FLIR IR camera and had the thermometer side by side and it is accurate.

I understand that the cooking surface will probably be the hottest on the stove and that's why I put the thermometer there.

Try putting the other thermometer next to it just as a check.

Any way you recommend checking the gaskets? I have done a visual inspection with everything looking good.
Close a dollar bill in the door it should be hard to pull out

Ok I will try that.

Unfortunately this whole woodstove is gasketed together on all the panels. Any recommendations to check them?
No just check the door and glass if that's fine you could check for leaks with smoke

Mine can hit 800-900 regularly. I’m usually trying to slow it down if I see it approaching that temp. I currently don’t have a surface thermometer. I know if my Auber probe is in the upper 600s, the STT is cooking. Checked by IR.
I think I have associated it with how the coals lay in the bottom. Reloading too hot, too soon.
Sometimes fresh wood that is off gassing is perched up on coals that haven’t crumbled yet and it starts to get away. I can usually knock them down more level and the temp drops.

Hello Fellow Aspen C3 owners. It's been awhile since I've been checking out the latest threads here on the Aspen. Interesting to see all the experiences with the stove (both good and bad). I have to say, since my last post here, the stove is working very well for me. I never have the extreme temperatures that I was getting initially. Since my last post in 2022, I haven't changed the baffle nor the blanket, I'm very gentle with it when cleaning the stove and the chimney (make sure you put a bag under the flu pipe before cleaning the chimney or the blanket will have a mess on it). Every Fall I take out the bricks, clean it all up, put the bricks back in reverse so they are rotated each year (might be a meaningless task to some people), and using (DRY) wood for the winter, I always take the approach of slow and steady.

Having said all that, user mycellianhollow referenced that thread in his previous post. In it, I give a length explanation of how I came to (finally) find the sweet spot in running this stove. It may help. Again, this is not a stove to "push" in generating heat and coals as fast as possible. Just my take: https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads...-c3-how-hot-should-it-run.188944/post-2625159

While I'm here (and this could be in a separate thread if needed) what I am wondering about though, is if anyone is seeing inside the firebox in the very back where the plate that hides the thermostat mechanism, the "paint" coming off (or whatever it is) and exposing bare metal shiny/silvery metal of that plate. The "paint" that was there is fairly thick so I'm wondering if this is going to be a problem in that if there is more than just paint coming off. I've sprayed over those bare spots with stove paint but it doesn't last. Of course, VC won't answer the question, they tell you to contact the reseller of the stove. But clearly, the reseller here knows very little about the peculiarities of this stove. So, I'm wondering if anyone here has seen this too and thank you for sharing your experiences here!
