Baffle Replacement

I had to replace my upper and lower ceramic boards in my Shelburne Hearthstone wood stove, the lower one had gotten brittle and broke. According to my manual there is two which is what I put in, but my stove now smokes like never before when I open the door and with the draft wide open burns very slowly. I have to open the ash box to get the fire going at all. I am starting to believe that my stove did not have the upper baffle as the manual states Anyone else have this problem?

I don't think you have them in place properly. If I remember right, the upper board is larger than the lower one. They should be nearly flush with the front secondary burn tube. Were you able to get the stainless retainer lined up with the front burn tube ok?

Stainless retainer? T.hey didn't come with a retainer. Yes they are two different sizes and appeared to only fit in one way. the manual's exploded view doesn't show placement very well.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology? I am talking of the upper and lower ceramic boards, some people refer to them as baffles?

Ya, we are talking about the same part. There is a stainless steel bracket, or baffle retainer that mounts on top of the front secondary air tube. This keeps the baffle in place and also protects the front edge of the baffle board. If I remember right there is a cotter pin that goes through the retainer and through the front air tube.
