Best Smelling Wood

I'm probably alone in this, but I really enjoy the smell of freshly split black walnut.

That stuff smells horrible! Burns nice after about 10 years drying time (So I exaggerated not by much though)
I go with Cherry or Hickory!! Reminds me of BBQ!

sasafras, black birch- if you haven't smelled them then you would really be surprised!

I also like hemlock- when there re a few broken branches in the spring, the sweet smell is really outrageous.

You guys that like Black Birch does it really smell that good in the stove? I have a few trees that I cut down last week. My property is filled with black birch though I never burned it before. I am thinking that if it smells that good I'll save it for the firepit on my patio.

I voted other. I just split some black birch, thought it smelled great. Black cherry and cedar are nice too.

The only wood that I've split that I thought smelled pretty bad was some black locust that had been used as fill. This stuff was under ground for at least 3 years... It was pretty damp but no rot... but it smelled awful when split.

Well, when I burn it in the stove I get a whiff of it when I open the stove door, or if I'm outside, and it smells fantastic. Yes, save some for the outdoor firepit; you'll be very pleased. Smells like Wintergreen...

Just about anything that's DRY.

Someone down the street is burning something NOT DRY and it smells like $h!t.

I also have a neighbor that burns trash in his chiminea and that's worse than $h!t.

Oak tastes pretty good too, when I'm sippin' on a glass of good Bourbon. The wife mentioned the other night that it always tastes best when you're sitting in front of a fire...go figure.

Any fresh split wood is great. Oak, Cherry, and Poplar are my favorite. But I like it all.

Ash sometimes has a melon smell about it that I like.
