20131231_132643-1117516371.jpg I got a small truck load of what i'm assuming is black locust and cherry. The locust "?" came from an area where i've been cutting a lot of mulberry but there were no leaves to ID this wood. Only thing i can say is it's a lighter yellow than the mulberry and the very center was somewhat punky. The other wood is seasoned but damp from laying on the ground and have a faint cherry smell to it.

I do see some Black locust here I think. As for the other if I where to guess it would be some type of maple. This is only a guess mind you.
My ID skills are improving but I am still new to the trade.

All the Best and Happy New Year to All !

Locust and Soft Maple

Definite BL. Large pic looks to be Maple.

Most definitely nrford has it right again. You can take his word for sure as he has worked in this business a few years and knows his logs and lumber well.

ok. thanks guys. the faint cherry smell had me fooled. Happy new year again and happy burning.

Soft maple & BL - that's about the perfect combination to have on hand. Happy cutting!

I generally look at I.D. Threads, guess on the wood type (either in my head or I post if I'm somewhat confident), and then wait to see what nrford has to say to confirm or deny my guess.

I'm flattered guys, THANKS. I have been wrong on a few(usually it's something I have very little experience with), so I'm still learning as well!

And I think you will agree it is more difficult to ID from a picture than if you were right there.

Yes, especially a poor photo!

I agree. The large stacked rounds are Red Maple, and the smaller log laying on its side is Black Locust. The splits are Red Maple, and the large round with the punky center I cannot see enlarged so I can't tell. Both are great firewoods.
