Looked in the firebox the other day and the load of wood had carbonized so it was primarily charcoal. This was nice dry wood and the boiler (older P&M) had been idling most of the day. Sure there were some areas that had burnt, and the water was up to temp but things didn't look as "photogenic" as a firebox full of ...well..FIRE.
Logically I know that there are a lot of BTUs just waiting to be used but my resident "expert" told me that our wood was just too dry and we should throw some green poplar or beech in to create flames, and probably smoke and creosote as well.
What could possibly be wrong with having a owb full of glowing red coals?
