Can you get a permit in NY State to cut wood?

I was reading in another thread that some states allow you to obtain a permit to cut trees that have fallen on state land. I was wondering if there are any New Yorkers here who know if you can obtain one in NY.
I have gotten some free wood that I have seen advertised but haven't seen any new advertisements lately. My husband and I would like to get as much wood stacked as possible. Thanks!

On Federal land, it's easy. Just get a dead and down permit. Don't know about your state rules. Call one of you state agencies, I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. In NC it's part of the Hunting/sportsman permitting.

In Maryland it's on state forest land. $5 per truckload Maryland residents only. The $5 permit is obtained from the Forest Service office for that particular state forest. Dead and/or downed trees within 100' of the forest roads. No winches or chains allowed. In NY think it would be similar. You need to find the office for the state forest area you want to cut in.

Sure looks to me like some bureaucrat doesn't want the hassle or there was abuse of a prior system.

I've seen other states that have it for a small fee. Figures it would be my state that doesn't. Typical NY.

You might want to check with watersheds owned by municipal (town) water Departments (reservoirs). Some of them have firewood cutting programs.
