Question:

We have two antique fireplace mantles. We are remodeling and need to install two prefab top direct vent fireplace units, one gas and one wood. The opening dimensions for the oak mantle are 41 1/2"W and 38 1/4"H (overall height of mantle is 81"). Can we install a 36"gas unit with 3"tile around, is there enough clearance? The mahogany mantle, over 91"H, opening is 41"W and 39 1/2"H. Can we install a wood unit, is there one 30"W? We understand there needs to be 6"tile around? Is there a wood unit with enough clearance? We really want to use these beautiful mantles with metal units, is it possible with these opening sizes? Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:

Every unit has different clearances to the sides and top, but I feel assured that you will be able to find something that fits your needs for the gas unit. Many may fit the bill....you'll have to do some more digging on the wood unit since we don't have access to many of the current owners manuals which specifiy clearances. Many of the fireplace companies now have PDF's of their manuals online. This may be a good way to start your shopping.
