It looks as if I will be going straight through the ridge with an eight inch chimney. It is a metal roof 4/12. Any suggestions on which flashing to use?

It will be insulated metal, but the brand may depend on the brand of flashing. I contacted the local Excel dealer and he told me the brand was not worth using. Perhaps his margin was larger on another brand. He never bothered to contact me with the quote on the brand he was pushing.
The local stove store told me I would have to one custom made as no one did ridge flashings. However I found them listed by both Excel and Duravent.
This should not be this difficult. I swear you run into every dufus on the planet when building.

Plan carefully when going through the ridge. If you have a truss system you should be ok, but if it is a ridge pole & rafter system, you'll have to figure how you will deal with the ridge pole. Cut & box, or figure going slightly lower than the ridge to avoid the ridge pole.
It is trusses with a clear shot. That is the main reason for exitiing there. Where I would like to put it, a truss blocks the path for a straight chimney.
Except every time I look for a flashing that breaks both ways so that it will sit on the ridge I am told it will not work or that it is a one off custom option as no company manufactures one.
I imagine at this point I will be contacting manufactures direct.
At least you didn't buy your chimney yet, so you can go with whatever works for you. I was in a similiar situation, but had already bought my chimney, only to find out they didn't offer a ridge flashing. I ran across a few ridge flashings in my search, just wouldn't work for the chimney I bought. I ended up building a little cupola on the ridge and putting the flashing on top of that. Worked out pretty well.
What screwed me is not realizing that not all 6" chimney is the same OD. I made my life more difficult by going with cheaper triple wall chimney. Think it was around 10" OD.
Not all 8" ID pipe has the same OD. If one has a vented flashing, and starts trimming it down to increase the diameter one runs the risk of running into the vents.
My biggest problems are first I do not live in a large metropolitan area. The post office is open 2 hours per day during the week and one hour on Saturday.
The dealer you see when you try to purchase something is most likely the only one around for 50+ miles. If the clerk is clueless, things do not go well. Secondly, if you ask for info on the web your email and phone number is requested. I need a part number, not a thousand spam emails or a similar number of robo calls.
This is the sixth chimney I have installed. 30 miles to the west of me there are two stove dealers. One I went to about 10 years ago and his chimney kit was about 70% higher than the hardware store. I gave him a shot at selling me the new BK and he was $745 more than the dealer to the north of me another 25 miles. I'd rather not deal with him.
The other dealer told me ridge flashings were not made. She did not bother to look it up.
With the part number from a national manufacturer, I can get a hardware store to order the part. I deal with a local business, they make money and deal with dented or damaged product.

Ahh the pitfalls. Yes, Triple wall and solid pack are different OD. Triple wall is harder to work through framing. I dont like it.

I made a couple of calls this morning before I left for work. I told both outfits I wanted everything from the ceiling box to the cap. I will give them a day or two and see if either one comes through.

Yes but I would never give a quote on materials without seeing what was needed myself.
The hardware stores do not send employees out to see if the customer has correctly ordered what he needs. If I come up short or have an overage, that is my problem, and for the most part they do not care.
That is pretty much it in a nutshell. And the attitude is everywhere. From private business to government. I do not think it is going to get any better. Due to the lack of competition around here, it seems as if many businesses are still operating in spite of themselves.
A few years ago a friend had a sewer problem on a Saturday afternoon. We went to the big box store in the town 30 miles over. Someone in the plumbing department offfered to help. When I explained what I needed I was told I would have to wait until the plumbing supply house opened on Monday. The plumbing supply house will not sell to homeowners.
The friend asked what we could do. I said I would find a fitting smaller on the inside than we needed, take it home, chuck it in the lathe, and make the part. The store employee looked at me like I was stupid, shrugged and walked away. When he moved, I saw he had been standing in front of a box of the part I needed.
Part of my frustration is that I have been fighting this type of ignorance for many, many, years.

That's too bad. Our local Ace Hardware will bend over backward to keep you happy. Unless it's a special order, they take back anything I get for a project that I don't end up using. Their service is exemplary.
