Frigid Temps ~~ What was your overnight low?

It was a balmy 2degrees in south jersey this mornin. Forgot to plug my truck in last night so it was quite a smoke show when it fired up.

Overnight low here was 2F. Been loading hardwoods mixed with pine for days now, since we aren't getting out of the teens during the day. But still haven't heard the oil burner that much and the wood was mostly free so I am ahead of the game.

I just checked. In Base Jubany, Antarctica it is 40 degrees right now and raining.

I don't normally like electric blankets but might consider one under these conditions. Keep the home fires burning and remember to keep the basement above freezing. Maybe open a faucet enough to let it trickle if you have fussy or exterior wall piping to that sink.

Buy yourself a good DOWN comforter and you will never consider using that electric blanket. They are sooooo very warm. Worth every penny .... rather, dollar.

Second that enthusiastically. My 2nd floor is unheated and I even have the stairs blocked off to keep the heat downstairs where it belongs, but I was entirely comfortable even last night with outside temps at -18 when I went to bed-- and even when the power went out for several hours in the middle of the night and the boiler I have to rely on when it's this cold quit. I do have good attic insulation, but it's still pretty cold on 2nd floor. I've never taken a thermometer up there, but I'd guess it's usually somewhere in the '40s.

I have a new found respect for you.

This morning house was 81 downstairs and 77 upstairs coldest bedroom was 70

I think you've chosen the wrong handle, Iceman.

Each to his/her own, of course, but ugh! I would find that much heat absolutely stifling and would be throwing open doors and windows to get relief.

I'm in a room at 77 degrees right now. It is comfortable to me (nice and dry). What stinks around here is the humidity in the Summer.

A buddy 4 miles inland had 24 below.
England 13 going 24/7 since Oct.
When it was -10 there was a morning or two I heard the Toyo kick on, that gets me out of bed in a hurry.
We have burned less than $100.00 of oil in the last 2 winters.

It was -14 this morning and reached a high of 9 today then back down to 6 and has now gone up to 8 and will reach double digits by morning, then some snow!

-18 here last night when I went to bed around 1:00 AM, -12 here this AM around 9, then rose dramatically to... 0 for the day. But it's stayed within a couple degrees of that until now, and is gradually rising until we get a very welcome balmy stretch of 20 or so tomorrow.

Would have been OK if the power hadn't failed for three hours in the early morning hours. My boiler has struggled all day to get the house temperature back up from around the mid-40s where it fell while I was sound asleep, so I've idiotically had to resort to using both the boiler and the tiny stove, and a couple of electric heaters in distant rooms, to maintain a minimally acceptable temperature in the mid-60s. (grrrrr)

I do envy you guys with the big stoves. My tiny one does what I need down to the low single digits, but after that it just can't keep up, even packed full with high-BTU wood and that fabulous draft of the low, low temps.

Thanks! It had come and gone by the time I got up, and I'm really glad for that.
