GC built fireplace out like this and the marble surround is getting too hot. If touched, hand could burn. Does anyone know the reason why? This is a mezzo 72. The concrete mantle image is the before (installed by the builder) and did not get hot previously.

Get an Infrared thermometer & verify the temperature of the stone. If it does exceed the manual’s numbers, contact your dealer/installer.

Are you sure that the deep recess, with combustible material is approved? I would check the finishing requirement section in the installation manual.

The deep recess creates a heat dam and will overheat all of the material that protrudes on the front and sides of the fireplace. It can also cause the glass to overheat and shatter.

I have attached the relevant pages from the install manual. Yours does not appear to be an acceptable installation according to the manual.
