You can imagine my surprise when I walked around side of building and saw this home made connection into masonry chimney. House was for sale so who knows how they planned on fixing that mess.

Get a Brillo Pad on that pipe and it will shine right up. No problems.;lol;lol
 
Any idea what the duct between house and van is?

It's just a picture I found on the internet, but...

It appears to me that there is a 50 gallon barrel heating the inside of the van; the warm air (and whatever CO enters the van from the leaky barrel) travels downwards in a piece of taped up old rectangular duct. Must be a fan on the other side to pull it down.

It probably burns grass clippings and the personal effects of whatever building inspectors come around.
