I just installed a bk princess insert. As mentioned, you should actually start collecting wood years in advance, but I didn't. I had a cord delivered yesterday. Random checking of the wood pieces indicates that the wood is dry, so that is good. But I need 5 cords by next season. I live in CO and plan on cutting wood in the national forest. Any tips on how to get the wood pile started? How do you get the pile started without paying for wood or being on 24 hour Craigslist watch for free wood (which I can not do because of my job)?

I have a android smartphone with the Craiglist Notification app. I get alerts any time the words Fire Wood Firewood are posted in a free listing. Lot's of dry or partially seasoned hardwood is given away. There is a manifesto guide on here somewhere about finding free wood. Once you start looking, free wood just seems to appear, you notice it everywhere. The world is made of wood and concrete!

Seconding using an app of some sort to get CL notifications. I don't have a smartphone because I won't pay for a data plan, but my iPod Touch does the job so long as I have wifi. The app I use is Craigslist Ultimate, by a company called Escargot Studios -- I think I paid 99 cents for the app.
Keep tools ready to go on short notice -- saw with a good chain, bar oil and a can of gas/oil mixture, a bucking wedge and maybe a hammer and a couple of wedges. Figure out how you're going to keep the wood off the ground while it seasons, and get that set up before you start bringing wood home so that you don't have to move the wood around more than necessary.

Contact your county, city and/or township Public Works Dept. Park and Recreation Department and see what they do with all the stuff they take down or clean up. You may be able to clean up yourself.

Google alerts are another option, I have tried it and others, but the app CraigsNotifica 2.89 seems the fastest. I may try this RSS alert, (broken link removed) Something out there is faster than what I am using,as I have been beaten to the score a few times on posts that have been up less than 20 minutes.
