I would like to remove the bi-metallic coil cover on the Blaze King40 current model, so I can check the position of the air flap when at: full open, quarter, half, three quarter and fully closed and accurately mark these positions on the air control knob plate.

Undo the 2 square drive screws that hold the cover to the stove. The center screw does not need to be taken out, that limits the flappers max travel. Make sure the flapper is in the closed position when reinstalling the cover. It’s a good time to lube the thermostat flapper pivot points and thermostat friction washer along the shaft while you have the cover off.
