The Wood Stove Design Challenge has 14 finalist in a competition to spark new technology in wood stoves.

I think all us here on this board would like to see realistic solutions for heating our houses.

I think some area's that needs to be addressed is BTU output , burn times, price point, durability, and reliability.

There are some really good ideas but how many can answer the questions above to the home owners using the products.

So go Vote if you have a chance , hopefully for the most complete solution. As some are good ideas but not a complete solution.

Daggone it. When are they gonna get some real pics of that Union stove?

When the union lets them. >>

I fear that the Union stove is gonna be everything I want in a stove - and then somehow they are gonna turn around and make it butt ugly.

It already is a very period looking design. My wife took one look at the Fireview and nixed its Victorian look. She doesn't like the Union either. But then again, she doesn't like the old duckfooted Mansfield either. Fussy that way she is.

I am picturing stamped metal sides with folksy settings backed up by zebra colored soap stone on a pedestal.;sick

If that is what you suspect, you will be sadly disappointed! It will not be butt ugly!

More like wildebeest on plastic....but the plastic will be really strong stuff. :)

Good to hear. The picture makes it look pretty eccentric. More like a box on sawhorses.

;lol Maybe that is the best description I've heard yet. I would not call it eccentric but it will be different and I think many will like it not only for the heat but for other reasons too.

Maybe, but I can't think of another successful stove that looks like it. What I like about the Keystone and the Progress is that they fit in both traditional and contemporary interiors. So far the Union looks like sort of a cross between arts & crafts and maybe a little steampunk added. Seems like a narrow market appeal, but we'll see.

Well, the final look has yet to be established.

Have 'em call me. I will tell them what it should look like.;lol

But what if they tell you what they think you look like? ;)

Or make the door swing the wrong darn way. I hope that concept drawing is not what makes it into production. I'm not even picky and am fine with a steel box. I could do soapstone, cast iron, steel, heck I could even live with a BK if I had to. But that would not be in my living room. The PH is a great looking stove and I think one of the best looking on the market. I hope they don't end up with the best and worst looking stoves on the market.<>

Gull wind doors.

Maybe Woodstock will have another open house BBQ to introduce the new stove? I want to make a run out there some day and that would be a good excuse.

I haven't paid much attention to them before, but the masonry heaters in that list both look really good to me. I think their sheer size makes them seem more like an integral part of the house, instead of a discreet object that happens to be in the house. Very satisfying.

I don't care for the Union either. Those massive cast legs look like they must've been glued on, because there are no obvious beams connecting them for the stove to sit on. The potential appeal of a design like that depends heavily, in my opinion, on its ability to visually explain itself. The iconic decorations like the eagle and stars and crown molding can't make up for the fact that the main idea hasn't quite been worked out yet.

Well Jon, if I looked at that stove through your eyes I too would be disappointed. However, you very well may change your opinion in the coming months.

Todd, I'd like to see an Open House too.

I concur with that. Something not right about how it looks. I can't picture it in a home...............Although I think it would look nice in a boiler room.

We're going to a wedding in New Hampshire in early August. What are the chances we could stop in at Woodstock for a sneak peek? I'm seriously considering selling the Fireview and buying the Union Hybrid if they have a really good introductory offer.

My vote is going to either the Gymse or Tulikivi. Not sure which yet.
