Is this ok?

When my stove gets going it ticks/creaks. Sometimes quite a lot and sometimes quite quickly.

I'm pretty sure the place that fitted it Sai this was ok, but would like some reassurance...

Can anyone advise?

if you have an insert, that's typical. i usually see that at temp changes, reloading etc.

as far as freestanding goes, i only have a classic Jotul, and I don't remember hearing any ticking. But I'll let others chime in.

It comes from the metal heating up expanding and contracting.

Perfectly normal for a metal box with a fire inside to make noises as the temperature changes.

Perfectly normal. Your car exhaust/headers will do the same as it warms up and cools down (depending on model).

Yes. Soon you will be able to tell weather it's heating up or cooling down just by listening to it!

I've noticed it seems to do it most when i close the air down.

As its heating up after starting it creaks a bit, then once its up to 400 degrees (centigrade) i start closing down and the creaking goes bananas!

I cant help thinking the things going to buckle or something....?

My stove makes creaking noises when it heats up and even more of them when it starts to cool down.. I was feared of it at the start, I used to think the same as you, "will it implode!?" I wondered if it was interior pressure due to shutting the air off now I just think of it as part of the deal...

Sometimes (well usually always) my knees crack and my back will pop when I squat down to load wood in the stove.

My wife calls that "the sound of old age".

But does it ping? Once I learned how to get a good fire going quickly the ticks and pings come out!

I've only had pings twice haha, one was a good fire, the other was a really good fire. It was the day I almost started a post asking if my secondary tubes should be glowing. A little more wood in the stove than usual, and got distracted with the air open too long before settling it down I think.
