Alaskan, you certainly could put soapstone or any other stone on the stove.
I still have an old soapstone warmer and remember using it whenever we used to go somewhere when I was a child. You see, my folks car was a Ford Model A; no heater. We'd heat that soapstone (had a handle for carrying too) then in the car we'd lay down burlap bags on the floor, put the soapstone on top and then a blanket to cover our legs and keep the heat in. We also used it from time to time in bed, but that was always a fight because there were 3 of us boys and 1 girl. Who get the warmth tonight?! Being the youngest, I didn't win a whole lot.

I had a granite slab, (cut and polished counter piece) on top of my Regency F1100 steel stove and it worked and looked great really dressing up the black steel,it was that black "onyx". Then I switched stove to a Hearthstone Phoenix upon which I added a 1 1/2" Polished soapstone slab (building salvage $20 for two 24 x 16 x 1 1/2" pieces). If I had "broken in" the piece by having it by the stove for several days to drive out any moisture it would not have started to thru crack at the edge center @ 5". I quickly removed it (400*) it cooled, the crack closed up and it has been standing behind the stove for five days now waiting to go back on. Wait a minute, if soapstone is nonporous stain and acid proof how does water/moisture get in?
Vermont Soapstone Company sells slabs exactly for the purpose in 3 sizes @ $150 plus shipping, to Alaska $$$.

That Altech link seems kinda sketchy.... Especially the "Fireview" they manufacture...

Yeah, I found that Altech fireplaces a couple years ago and was wondering what was up with it. I think Hearthstone is actually owned by some company over in Europe and both companies cast are produced in Belgium? It would be nice to see those styles over on this side of the pond.
Altech is legit. They are a licensee of ours and they purchase parts from us and assemble them there.

Honestly, Bill, I don't know the answer to your question other than to say, over the years, we have not seen a marked increase in what Altech orders from us. So glad to hear your stove is working out well!

You beat me to the punch, I was going to ask the same question. Hopefully, Ron will chime in and give us a bit of information on the upgrade. Then again, looking at your post it has been quite a while. Maybe, they are so busy keeping up with new orders he had to get back to work.
