I have found an older 118b and would like to place in front of my fireplace. The opening is an inch shorter than the rear pipe outlet height. Is it possible to put a heat shield under the stove so that shorter legs can be used?

I imagine you can but this will violate any original UL testing if it was done. What shorter legs will be used? If you are installing the stove without concern of insurance or inspection then at least do it safely. The stove should still have a good hearth under and in front of it and it should be connected to a full stainless liner.
