Hey all, I am new to the forums and am trying to get my firewood inventory in order, I have a few cords cut and plan on building a woodshed this summer. I try to keep my costs as low as I can, if not I might as well just buy fuel.. any way I was hoping to see if there is anyone on the Kenai Peninsula that would be willing to let my wife and I borrow their log splitter for a little while. I have a few things I could barter with.. I sell hydraulic hoses for a living so if you needed to replace any I could certainly help with that. I also have a decent stock of reloading powders and .22 LR ammo which both seem to be in high demand right now. I work in Kenai and live in Sterling. Thanks in advance for the help.

You might look into an electric splitter. Mine was about $300 at the Fairbanks Home Depot, got about 25 cords through it no problem. It will handle birch rounds over 16" diameter in below freezing temps. Not as fast as a gas splitter, but you don't have to return it.
Do keep your extension cord short to minimize voltage drop, and keep the pump end of the ram level with or lower than the other end. If it is tipped the wrong way fluid will collect away from the reservoir and loses power.
For the price of renting a gas splitter for four days I have been making out like a bandit with this thing.

If you were a bit closer I could oblige a brief rental, but someone asked me the same thing the other day and when I went out to fire up the splitter I couldn't get the poor thing started! And the wheels were frozen into the mud. Guess I'm waiting for spring (or more work thawing it out). One of these years I'll make room in the garage for motorized items...

It might not be the exact answer you are looking for, but have you tried a Fiskars X27 splitting axe? In my opinion its just as fast and cheaper than a hydrolic splitter. Use a tire to hold the rounds in place on your splitting block and you cant go wrong.
I did buy the X27 a few months back and love it and enjoy using it. I just have a lot of wood I need to get split as quickly as possible. if I cant find one to borrow then no biggie but it sure would help.

Saw this video just yesterday. Works for any size round, not just one sized for the particular tire. In fact, you could make several of these for varying sizes of rounds. I'm going to give it a shot as I'm fed up of picking up the larger parts of the round to split more off of it.
I'm not a fan of his political rants (as I don't agree with most, if not all, of them), but he's got some pretty handy tips for several things around the home, including DIY and wood processing.
