This is my first post ... but I've been lurking for about a month now. My local power tools guy turned me on to the site when I asked him about his OWB. He said I ought to do some research here...it was a great suggestion.

I've learned a lot from the forums. Unfortunately I'm not yet able to contribute much back.

But I do have me some pictures. And I know you all like pictures, especially work that's in process.

I took these shots the day Hurricane Sandy left town. These are moving from east to west looking south from my house. It's like a huge giant just walked through our back yard. No doubt some of this was a domino fall...

A few weeks later, again from east to west.

In February we had some pros come in to take down the ones I wouldn't touch. Those included one leaner in our back yard and a few very large trees. Here's what it looked like after that.

Fast forward to this past weekend. I had stacked the rounds in 3 areas of the yard -- east, center and west. Well, I also just piled some up.

I originally started reading the Hearth forums to research other heating options (OWB) besides the insert we have ...but I quickly realized that I have more work to do before I even worry about that. I need to get this stuff (at least what I will use next year) split and stacked NOW.

In past years, we've had pros out to drop some trees that were a risk to the house. (We're really glad we did that as Sandy could have been a nightmare) From what I can remember, we've got a mix of cherry, oak, ash, maple, black walnut, sassafrass. So not bad at all.

I'll be posting more in the next few days as I get into splitting and stacking. Will probably need some tree ID help -- I want to make sure I start by splitting stuff I can use next burning season.

Hi Runner T, and welcome. Looks like you are getting a good start on your stacks for next year. Plenty to learn on the site. Just check out all the relevant info here and you should do well.

Welcome Runner T
Looks like Sandy did not hurt you too bad by tearing up all the trees in your landscape but chose to merely give you a lot of good burning firewood.
No damage done hopefully from the storm

What kind of dog?

Chocolate lab

Welcome to the Hearth, Runner.
Looks to me like you'll fit in here quite easily.
You already have a handle on pics, AND they're pics of firewood........yeah, it's all gooder.;)
Great pics.

For what its worth... I would not bother throwing a tarp over rounds.

I know you already said it, but I am gonna reinforce it...get that stuff split and stacked a.s.a.p. Full sun and wind in single rows will do you the best. Top cover if you feel the need. You are already down to 8 maybe 9 months to season next years stuff. Pushing it at best.

+1 on really don't need tarps on rounds, but no harm no foul either.
It can be a good marker as being my property, hands off !! . :-)

+1
Also it'd be nice to post pictures of the rows of stacked splits ;) :)

He's a Vizsla.
The breed is typically used for bird hunting, but I'm not a hunter. I take him running sometimes...he's fast as all get out. He's either going 100 miles an hour or he's asleep on the couch.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I will be removing the tarps, and I'm working on the splitting. I wish I'd come across this site back in December. It wouldn't all be bucked, but I'd have enough split and stacked. Rookie mistakes...

Gotta' learn somehow or another.
Things should only get gooder from here on out.

I think this ranks up there with gooder-er.

Welcome to the forum Runner T.

That is a great first post! Looks like you were left with a mess to clean up. But the good part is now you know how to handle it and it will give you good returns by warming your home.

Welcome RunnerT and nice work! How much wood do you think you have there?

So...Northwest NJ....as in Sussex County by chance?

welcome

I am actually at the very western tip of Morris County. If I throw a stone in one direction I'd be in Warren County, if I throw it in another direction I'd be in Hunterdon County.

So this is a complete guess from a novice, so take that for what it's worth.
But if I add it all up, I'm guessing I have 12-15 cords. I also have some other stuff not pictured there that might add up to 3-5 more.
Perhaps I need to run a contest where I take good pictures of all the different piles and folks can guess how much...

"Windfall", indeed ;lol. Welcome! Rick
