New Huskee Log Splitter

After going back and forth for a long time, I purchased a Huskee 22 ton splitter from my my local Tractor Supply. I purchased the 4-way splitting wedge but found that it only works well on smaller pieces (directions say < 14 inches) or on soft wood. I was fortunate of having more wood to process than I had space for and wanted to speed up the process of splitting and stacking. I had borrowed a splitter from a neighbor a couple of times to process some rounds that I couldn't split. The last time that I borrowed it, the piston that runs the splitting wedge stopped moving. The engine was running fine but the splitter stopped moving. He had to take it to a service center to get it fixed. I felt awful and offered to pay for the repair but he wouldn't accept anything. Now I have the convenience of using a splitter whenever I need it without bothering my neighbor or running the risk of something going wrong when I'm using his splitter. So far, I'm very pleased. The cycle time is listed as 13 seconds and seems fast enough.

Enjoy, I have had mine for 6 yrs cut an average of 4 cords a yr without any problems. I did check the bearings for grease before I pulled it to a farm where I cut wood and it had come from the factory with zero grease in the wheel bearings.
So just a heads up, it was very easy to pack the wheel bearings.

I bought my Swisher 22 ton splitter off of Craigslist from a guy in Altoona. He said it was only used twice in the listing, and he wasn't kidding either! It was brand spanking new, and I got it for 800 bucks!! He had the good synthetic hydro fluid in it, too.

That was 4 years ago, and I've literally split at LEAST 50 cord or more of wood with that splitter. I plan on changing the engine oil again this spring and also putting a new hydro filter on her. And thanks to Captain One Leg's reminder, I'm going to also buy the grease caps for the axles and pack the bearings too, as I do use the splitter on the different job sites where we cut when we have the time to split on site.....

I did the same thing when I bought mine, borrowed a neighbors a number of times but had to keep tinkering with it. So instead of fixing his I bought my own. Love having that thing.

3rd season with mine (same one). Nothing has stopped it yet. Only problem I have had is a small bolt that is on the end of the cylinder by where the ram comes out. This bolt worked out and I lost it before I knew it was gone. Not too much problem though. Bought a new bolt and washer at the hardware, it is metric though if anyone has the same issue.
I see you have it vertical which works fine but if you ever use it horizontal this make it much nicer.

+1 have that on mine also. Works great and is heavy duty

I know, I know.......they work both ways that's why they are made that way. Just for the record I never said one was better than the other and besides Dennis can't throw a rock this far and hit me.

On those that you wanted the 4-way wedge, it works great to split and then quickly turn the log and split again. Two strokes and 4 splits. Also, although they say a 13 second cycle time, it need not take that long. We simply do not use the entire cycle as we don't need it. Many times a couple inches into the wood and it is split. Raise the wedge to about 2" higher than the next log and then 4 or 5" down and the next split is done. It is difficult for a man to work faster than the splitter will split unless you have some really gnarly stuff. However, we do not buy something based on the exceptions. That would be like saying, "We won't buy that car because we've heard a few folks have had trouble with..." Don't make decisions based on the exceptions.

The (broken link removed to http://www.woodsplitterdirect.com/brands/Swisher.html) and all their products actually really make good stuff. I use to think they were more lower end log splitters, but come to find out they they have been around for 60+ years and they are American fabricated (which is a bonus now a days), unlike TCS and the Speeco etc. They import and assemble in the USA unfortunately like everyone else.
