New to me Splitter

I was lucky enough to find a Huskee 22 ton splitter on Craigslist last night. It is supposedly only about a year old with about 3 cords through it. The splitter is in great shape. I ended up buying it for $750 which I thought was a good deal. I tried it out briefly when I got home and it worked well. I have some good rounds to throw at it later in the week. I can't wait to to give it a good workout.

Yeah I'd say you were lucky to find that deal. The splitter appears to have very little wear so woudn't doubt it's only split three cord. Real good price too, you did very well. If it were me I'd change the oil before you get busy splitting just in case the previous owner didn't change the oil after breaking in the motor. These are popular splitters and split most everything you throw at it.

A very good suggestion. Lots of folks miss that part of the owners manual.
 
Thanks Bigsby, I appreciate the suggestion. I will change the oil. I checked the hydraulic fluid & was amazed at how clean it looks. I also couldn't believe how easy this trailered behind my truck for the 35 mile drive. There were a few times where I wanted to pull over to make sure that it was still there.
 
You're welcome. Couple other notes on the splitter: the bolt that connects the wedge to the cylinder is pretty long after the nut and can be a good spot to pinch your fingers. I hacksawed mine flush with the nut like other people and it's not an issue anymore. Also check the motor mount fasteners after a few years, they tend to loosen up a little from the all the vibration. Good luck with her!
 
I'll have to check them out. Have any of you changed the jack out to something different? I'm not sure if I'm a fan of it yet.
The beam is balanced nicely over the wheels so there's not much tongue weight so the stand is adequate I believe. You'll get some front to back motion sometimes, especially splitting vertical. Just chuck the wheels if it bothers you.

If your truck had trouble pulling it I would suggest a new truck might be in order. I would suggest that it isn't a real good idea to tow any of them too far, besides bearings and tiny tires...small tires=high rpm=blown tires, with no suspension they take some pretty wicked bounces off even the tiniest of bumps! And not being able to see them in your rear view mirrors.....
 
We blew a tire out on our troy bilt 27ton one time and didnt know it. Needless to say we got a new tire, wheel and fender. Also we dont pull it anywhere without it being hook to the 4wheeler and being hauled on a trailer. You cant see those darn things back there
 
Great splitter. Go with Rotella T6 in it, and ethanol free fuel if you are able.

Get a log cradle if you can, great work saver.

I don't plan on towing it that kind of distance again, that was a one time deal. If I need to tow that kind of distance in the future, it will go into my trailer first. I was just surprised that I wasn't hearing it bounce around on the drive. I heard over really bad bumps. I rented one a few years back & that thing really bounced around, fortunately it was a much shorter drive.
