My son and i went out this weekend to a friends house, 10 minutes away. The tornado went through the back of the property and took out some trees. Here are some pics of the trees we were working with. We got white oak red oak and copper beech

Never heard of a copper beech. Googled it. Beautiful tree!

Wood left behind by power line crew last year (summer 2021) and located in public land. A smaller log is measuring 26% at ~50F. I think they are red oak and ash (based on leaves). Only accessible through a hiking trail, about 200yds away from property, 300yds away from wood stacking area...

Goal is to bring these back home, one at a time, as morning work out.. deadline for myself: 2/12/2022.

On my screen these look like poplar. They have a green tinge.

Nice Love "The Beast". How is that beech to split?

Iv burned beech in the past, its a good wood. Almost oak BTUs but will season in about a year. I fined it to be a little ashey. Splits like any other wood.. not difficult.. not stringy.. I like it and will take it any chance I get.

Oh wow. Do you plan to solar kiln these woods or natural dry?
I actually season all my wood in wood sheds. I do have 3 racks now under a roof that hold about 2.5 cords that I just added this past summe4. I did the kilns as an experiment, just to see if I could do it and what results I could get. Once I split and fill up what iv burned this year Ill be sitting on 14 cords CSS.. heres a pic of one of 3 sheds that I have

Got some more free BTUs. My friend owns a tree company. Called me up said he had a local job and wanted to drop it at my shop. Of course I say yes. Its mix of oak, cherry, birch. I loaded it up Thursday.. still had snow on it.. I got a full dump truck load. I droped it off at my house and started cutting. Unfortunately frozen dirt all-over the logs from being loaded and dumped in the wet and mud. I went through 3 chains today which totally sucked because I normally dont have to sharpen 3 chains in a year. Good thing was I knew the wood was like this and used my oldest bar and chains. heres a pic of the load cut up into rounds.. a pic of the frozen mud

Free hauls are the best. Sweat equity being the major expense.

Found a dead oak about quarter mile away from home in the woods… took me about half hour to bring back a wheel barrow full. Fresh split at 25%, temperature correction puts it right at 28%. Hopefully ready to burn next winter. This will last me a day… so 1/140 winter 2023 ready lol

Not a lot of scrounging here.......Have to wait until the 2 1/2 feet of snow melts! Have my eye on a bunch of dead ash the blew over in a windstorm last month though.....
