Does anyone know what this plant is? it grows in sandy soil on cape cod, comes back every year, actually never goes away . it spreads easily, roots are traveling and rooting like a strawberry . And it has a pungent mint like sweet smell , which I love .

Your description of it as mint-like is correct -- that's mint.

Planted some along my patio during my Mojito phase a few years ago. It takes over, for sure - smells like I ran over a tube of toothpaste every time I mow.
