I'll start a reporting thread here - although the show does not start until Thursday (expo) and Wed. (education).

Webwidow and I flew out to Reno on Sunday to do a little sightseeing and then she (and I later) will go to Berkeley to visit our daughter.

Flew right over the Rockies, waved to MSG....LOTS of snow still down around there.

Had a 3 hour layover in Vegas, and needed breakfast so I suggested Wynns new place as somewhere that might be a bit upscale. We took a shuttle downtown and walked to Wynns - it is really all nice and pretty new. After a fine breakfast ($50) with dueling coffee pots, fresh squeezed OJ and Strawberries on the waffle, I took a moment to clean up while Webwidow hit the slots. She came back in 10 minutes with an extra $100, which more than took care of breakfast and transportation....bye, bye, Vegas - the big spenders have left!

Into Reno - has grown a bunch since I've been here last. Big housing developments always look strange set into brown desert hills with no trees. Anyone who wonders why pellets are so popular out here can take one look and figure it out - it's quite a distance up into those mountains where the trees are!

Got the rental car and steered toward Lake Tahoe where we are staying. A really pretty ride as you climb from 70 degree Reno into the snow covered hills around the lake. Lake Tahoe sits at 6,000 feet above sea level, and the snow pack typically starts right around that height. Many times there will be no snow at the lake but tons of it a few hundred feet up from there.

Checked into Harrahs in Reno, ate at my favorite fresh mexican place and then walked around the Casino downstairs. Webwidow lost a quick $20, but I had another 20 and I gave it to her and told her to site at the "Wheel of Fortune" slots...only on seat was empty. She took it and started spinning - and losing quick. She was about to walk away when I told her "keep spinning, you'll get the Wheel sooner or later". The ladies sitting on each side also told here to bet 3 at a time.

Bling, Bling, Bling - all of a sudden she wins and it goes up to 900 Quarters - about $225. - not bad, so she walks away and gets the cash.

I'm certain we will spend that and more, but it's nice to have a little of the Casinos money...if only temporarily.

I will be there tomorrow night. Unfotunatly were staying in the roach motel. Our travel department forgot about us and we got plane tickets and hotel stay last monday. If we dont show up on thurdsday evening call the cops.

Craig,
Welcome to my side of the country, land of the big trees! Enjoy your stay and good luck getting some more of the casinos money. Wave as you go past on the way to the bay area.
Norm

Send me a couple strippers :)

Just show up at the airport about 2 hours early with a credit card and a drivers' license and hope for the best. Don't forget to put your (no more than 3.0 oz) toothpaste and deodorant a one quart (no more, no less) ziplock bag.

And put all of that neat stuff engineers usually can't live without in your checked baggage. Or better yet, on the dresser in the apartment.

All ya need to take with ya is lots of resumes. And drink ginger ale at the hospitality rooms.

We barely made it back to the Las Vegas airport on time - what with the size of that place - even the longest security lines are usually only 15-20 minutes these days unless something is wrong.

Here is pic thread:

A bit OT, but I just flew to and from Atlanta for a few days. I had more electronics in my carry on than you can shake a docking device at and had absolutely no problems going through security.

Just what I can remember off the top of my head:

Laptop
PDA
Disto laser measurer
Calculator
Electronic signature pad
Cell phone
Chargers, docking stations and cables for all

Not one question...priceless....

Good, because I'm going to be carrying quite a load of e-gear in my bag as well.

No water bottles though! haha

Corie
Heres a way to get a few beers on the plane.
1) stop at the last bar before security
2) order 2 beers
3) down em
4) go through security
Be sure you are seated near the rest room!

Actually, you may be better off with carry on. In the past 2 weeks I've had two friends that have had stuff lifted out of their luggage. No TSA tags indicating opening. Just pure theft. I'm beginning to think that we've created a monster here and given a lot of TSA checkers the license to steal.

yeah, laptop, camera will be in carry on only.

I'm planning on watching a DVD during the flight, if that's allowed. I don't take very well to being in airplanes.

Corie:
Take only the minimum for the electronics, and do carry it with you. Don't take any toys, you won't have time to use them. If you stress in flight, a good friend says a dramamine does wonders. If you don't have a window and it's a direct or one hopper eon't worry, you'll have clouds most of the way and there really isn't anything to see outside. Better to catch a nap, you'll need it.

Once you get there, if you get offered coupons, or gift packs, take them. Spend some time in your hotel room deciding what you want to use. Meals for free are always good. Buffet breakfasts are great and they are from way early to way late. Let me know your hotel through a PM and I'll ask my friends who live there what the good deals are.

Remember there is a Kinkos close to wherever you are. Don't skimp on sharing your resume, keep one clean copy to have it redone. Business cards would be great, but may be a little late. If you have some, with a vitae of your background/interests go for it. If you don't have any and you can get a quick print job, do that. Fire Engine Red would be a good background color for your cards. Or is that a "bright cherry glow".

It's be better than when I went to the MLA annual after graduate school. Remember, most of these folks are good old boys/girls.

The only reason I really wanted to take the laptop, other than for the in flight DVD was so I can upload pics each day.

My memory card only holds about 100 pictures, and I foresee taking quite a few each day.

Thanks for the advice Rich! I'm going to get Resume's taken care of tomorrow. Should have gotten on the business cards sooner.

It takes about a galllon of jack to calm me down on a flight. I dont mind flying, i just enjoy flying buzzed. I am the type that cant sit still. Cramped in a seat next to people that i dont know makes it worse. Uncle rich, i will be in your teritory tomorrow. I have a layover in salt lake, thats going to hurt the pocket book even in utah.

Corie, quick buy some memory sticks. The big box stores are selling them dirt cheap. Office Max had 1gig's for 14.99. Trade the big box for a flash drive and a few memory sticks, I bet Craig would allow you to transfer some data at the Hearth.net booth???? Right, Craig?????

In a former life I used to fly into Washington National about every six weeks. I had no problem until I went up the Potomac River at a 45* angle for 20 miles and the captain snapped the bird straight to land. I, too, found it better to calm the nerves.

If you're going to land in the land of Zion, give me a call or email me and I can break away and share some time. I won't give my number over the net, but ping me, or when you get here call Sugarhouse Antiques, regardless of time.

you got PM unclerich.
Corie, you better show up for grub thursday night.. i bet you can crash a few industry parties with us. I have to disclose, i dont think industry parties are quite what google puts on at there industry show LOL.

haha oh you KNOW i am in for dinner thursday night. I was looking at the menu at that italian place and it looks superb. Not to mention their wine list is decent as far as my taste goes also. Now as long as they have Tanqueray.
