Depends on the innards. The refractory went pretty frequently with this model and is expensive to replace.

Well it looks pretty good but I need to vacuum it out to make sure the refractory material is good. Even if I have to replace it it is still a pretty good deal, I think.

sorry to rain on your parade, but one of the worst stoves VC ever made. Parts add up $$$ and need to be replaced often. Throws most of it's heat out the back. Hope it works out for ya. My comments come from a dealer point of view......a dealer that delt with a ton of pissed off customers who bought that stove.

According to the owner. It was bought new in 2000. And was us for four years. After that it has been in storage. I checked the refractory material and it looks ok to me. Holes are still there and they are the right size. I have to admit I wasn't aware of the baggage that comes with model I hope it works out. But on bright side it's probably worth the same amount for scrape that I paid for it.

The Average VC stove goes for $80 at the scrap yard. Ive taken lots of em to the bone yard...

So whats the deal with these stoves, i have read some posts and some are happy and some are really unhappy. Is it worth messing with or am i just about to fall off the dollar cliff. I would rather know 200 in then 500 later.

You don't need to go that far. LOL. I bought a used RA in 2008 and I'm happy with it. It keeps a 1400sf crawlspace ranch heated just fine in weather similar to yours. I can get 6 hours of usable heat and enough coals after 8h for easy restart. The combustion box is about shot and no way will I pay $300+ to replace it. It'll just be a partial smoke dragon. AND - It's a dayum HANDSOME stove!

Oh! so the stove will run just fine without the combustible box. It would be like u said a non-epa stove. Well thats fine with me, the epa is too busy in Utah to know the difference any how LOL!

No it will not run like a non-EPA stove. It will be worse. They have a tendency to build lots of creosote if the combustion system is shot.
I would make sure it's all ok, then sell it for $500! That's why I would have bought it.

Does the latest model throw heat out the back. I read somewhere they fixed that, also is the refactory material the same in the latest model. It is a different part number so im thinking no. Is the new secondary box better and last longer? Just weighing my options. thanks

It doesn't matter what others think, only what you think. Hook it up and see how you like it. 10 years ago people thought I was nuts for switching to a corn/pellet stove. Then propane went up to about $4 a gallon and suddenly I'm brilliant.

Definitely appears to be falling apart some... haven't seen them first hand but have seem many photos... seems like there may be some use left in the stove....

Isn't there a refractory package that needs to be accessed? Think it would be important to see that area. That huge crumbly hole is concerning though and could be an indicator of badness in the refractory area.

I am no expert in anyway though. But you have to be very careful buying used VC stoves.

Because so many people had a VC growing up. As adults, they have this memory of a bulletproof stove that heated the whole house. Ya know, the good ol days! Reality was much different though.
The older stoves had a reputation of being better, even they take lots of patience, maintenance, and money to keep running properly.

They have an outstanding foundry, one of if not America's best for stoves. They have a classic look and their cat stoves aren't too bad. Unfortunately having umpteen owner changes that didn't want to fix design defects didn't help either. They just lived off their stoves previous reputation.

I had the original Resolute and it was a great, tough and lovable stove.
