I have a year old princess that has a smoke smell coming from the hole in the top of the stove where the temp probe goes in. Happens when the cat gets good and hot and lasts until the cat starts cooling and then goes away as the stove cools or is turned way down. It has been this way since new, about a year ago. I have tried many ways to fix this nothing works, when the cat gets hot it starts stinking until it cools back down. Stove surface temp never exceeds 700 degrees and I run the stove by the book, Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Post pics of your install.
Describe in detail the entire venting system.
Where are you located?

Stick your nose just above the door and see if it’s coming from there it’s a much more likely source.

Located in Mt. install is straight up 12' and cap is 2' above ridge line which is 11' from pipe. I have plenty of draft and have never had any smoke issues other than coming from the temp gauge on top of the stove. I have isolated the issue and is definitely coming from that area. It only happens when the cat is nice and hot. My dealer didn't know of anything that could be causing it and never heard back from Blaze King. I have even considered welding the hole shut and running off my surface thermometer instead of the factory one with the probe. Appreciate the comebacks and open to any advice I can get.

There should be a washer on the base of the CAT thermometer. Is it there and not broken or missing?

I think that thermometer hole should be under a vacuum due to the draft but I don’t know for sure. IF it’s not under a vacuum and under pressure that hole would be emitting gases into the room which it sounds like yours is doing.

I wouldn’t weld anything, that would be illegal and probably void your warranty.

This member @BKVP will have a much better idea than me.

Thanks for the ideas, no my cat thermometer has no washer, never did. But like you said should be under vacuum, how can it not be? I was wondering if there is something internal in the cat area that was not right. I have no hair so I can't pull it out or I would! Thanks for the comeback.

No idea how this would be possible if there is sufficient draft. What elevation is your home located? Is there 12' of pipe total? Is black pipe single wall or double wall? Post some pictures of installation.

We're at 5100 ft. Yes the stack is give or take 12'. Inside pipe is double wall extendable, outside is stainless double wall insulated has a standard cap which is 2' above the ridgeline. Seems to have very good draft, have never had any issues with that. Like I stated before the only time it smells is when the cat is good and hot until it starts to cool and then no smell. I'll have to work on posting some pics.

15' is total recommend length at sea level.

This is what my dealer recommended after I gave him all the measurements, what does 15' at sea level corelate to my elevation? I don't recall any chimney heights mentioned in the installation instructions. The only guideline I remember is 2' above any part of the roof that is within 10' of the stack. I'll try to post a few pics tomorrow.

At 5,000' if it's straight up (no elbows) then at least 17.5 ft is recommended in the manual I have.

You are right I just was looking at the same page, funny the dealer never said anything about that and said 12' would be plenty. Thanks for pointing this out to me, so if add some chimney height hopefully the smell will go away. I'm willing to give it a try, just can't hardly believe the draft is lacking but thats about all it could be at this point. Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

The good news is that the additional height should fix the issue and improve stove performance.
