Are you SURE the Huskee 22 ton isnt BOTH horz/vert??? I got mine a month ago ($999 with $150 rebate in form of TSC gift card), and it is ,INDEED both vertical and horizontal.

I don't think anyone stated that the 22-ton doesn't go vertical. There was a complaint that the toe plate is too short for vertical splitting.

While I am quite happy with it I have two small complaints (which may be common with other brands IDK):
1) I prefer splitting in vertical mode. The plate that the log sits on is too small (may be ok for horizontal but I dont use it that way). This is a minor complaint but it certainly would be nicer if the plate was bigger
2) I have had the hydraulic return hose spring a leak twice, both times right near the connection to the filter. Others have commented in this forum about similar problems.

Ah, another wise convert.

Just bought a 22 ton Huskee last week did about a cord today works great. It's the first time i've used a vertical spliter much easier on the back.

And so we've lost another one to Dennis and his Merry Band of Vertical Splitters. ;) :)

Naaa...he just forgot to mention that he was really, really short.

I went with the 22 T Speeco (huskee) last year.
I did not like the way the ram was mounted/welded on the mtd models.
Maybe mtd beefed it up on the new models.

The Speeco had some feature I liked better,
Engine is not in the path of the falling split, wedge looked better to me.
I like the cradle beam, it centers & holds the the rounds on the beam(hand free),
& i like the operation valve lever location better on the Speeco.
I like it so far. & have used it in horizontal & vertical modes.

one issue i don't like with it is the tongue support &
I plan to replace the tongue support with a screw jack type soon.
I see some of the new ones have a better tongue support.

Dave, did you get the Speeco model (engine on opposite as operator station) or the Huskee (engine on same side as operator)??

Thanks,
Ed

Speeco, honda engine, No TS or Huskys here in Alaska.
New models have better tongue jack. Plan to replace jack on this one.

That looks exactly like the one i saw at princess auto, and considered buying.

I am on the fence about building my own, or buying one like yours.

Just remember the Honda engine you get on your splitter from a big box store is a GC not a GX. The GC is not the higher dollar pro grade Honda engine. The GC is their "consumer" grade engine. If I remember correctly they do not have a cast iron cylinder. Still a good engine, but just keep that in the back of your mind. Timber Wolf is building some lower cost modles, as is Split Fire.

I have never seen this splitter talked about.

It's Chinese, sold by several importers, I believe. I don't think there is any big name retailer overseeing production, like Northern does for their China built splitters.

The log cradles look to be identical to those on one of the splitters that Harbor Freight sold in the past. They may still sell the same line.
