As of September 30, 2015, there will be total ban on any pre EPA wood stoves.. The link above will provide the details. If you live in either Pierce or Tacoma Counties and you own a pre EPA wood stove, your time with your ol' stove is coming to an end.

Will there be stove police there? I can understand a ban on selling any non EPA compliant stoves but it seems like a ban on being able to use a product that was purchased legally is going to far. I didn't read the article, so maybe I'm missing something?

Yep , old news for sure......... I live in Pierce county and have known about it for a while . A lot of smoke dragons down here in the small town I live in.....They can fill the valley with smoke in a very short time on a calm day.

I read some of the legal document, but not all. It appears that the ban on non EPA stoves applies only to a defined area within the city of Tacoma.

If you have a building built before 1992, with no substantial remodeling done since then, and your only source of heat is your old smokey wood stove, then apply for an exemption. Even if you did remodel, if you are out of an urban growth area, you can still apply for an exemption.

(1) The following are eligible for exemption:

(A) A residence or commercial building that has no adequate
source of heat other than a solid fuel burning device and the
building was neither constructed nor substantially remodeled
after July 1, 1992.

(B) A residence or commercial building that has no adequate source
of heat other than a solid fuel heating device and the building:
i. was constructed or substantially remodeled after July 1,
1992; and
ii. is outside an urban growth area, as defined in RCW
36.70A; and
iii. is outside an area designated by EPA as a PM2.5 or
PM10 particulate nonattainment area

Odd that a detached shop or garage is also exempt from the ban.

It's a real drag when the pscleanair retards use air quality measurements from this non-attainment area to ban burning in the whole county when state law only allows burn bans due to air quality in the same area as the poor quality. Our counties are huge and the air quality up here in the mountains is not the same as down their in urban tacoma where this non-attainment area exists.

Since WA banned the sale or relocating/re-purposing of non-EPA compliant stoves in 1988 I am surprised they haven't banned them completely years ago.

Just skimmed the link in the first post but don't see that exemption for fireplaces. That's how they define "solid fuel burning devices" and the standards seem to apply to all of them:

"(m) Solid Fuel Burning Device or solid fuel heating device means a device that burns wood, coal, or any other nongaseous or nonliquid fuels, and includes any device burning any solid fuel which has a heat input less than onemillion British thermal units per hour. This includes, but is not limited to, devices used for aesthetic or space-heating purposes in a private residence or commercial establishment." [emphasis mine]

I here you brother, but those smoke dragons create a lot of bad public press. We have lots of them where I'm from. It caused the same ban a few years ago.
