This is on the edge of the grass in my parents backyard. Easy score if I want it. But I haven't the faintest clue what it is. No leaves either.

I'd guess sassafras but its almost impossible to id most trees from a picture like this..

i'd second Sassafras
 
My first thought was chestnut oak.
 
Go out with a ax or something and get a chunk of bark or at the base and smell it - close to a root beer smell it is >>>>, my guess to is sassafras just by the bark.
