TSC splitter question

Went to TSC to check out and possibly purchase the county line 22 ton splitter. While looking at the units that were kept outside and uncovered I noticed a fair amount of rust on various places on all their splitters. While speaking with the manager about purchasing one I asked if they could order a new one for me and I would pick it up the day it arrived. Manager shot that idea down. Is this too much to ask ?? Just wanted to ask for some opinions. Thanks

i wouldn't worry about it - mine spends all its time outside and has some surface rust here and there - not bad and I keep it in check by spraying it with some fluid film - it lives under a lean too with a tarp over it most of the year - even with the rust the sale prices they have this weekend is a great deal

Great stuff with lots of uses - can be used to spray the underside of your car, etc.. it leaves a waxy film that wont allow rust and will act as a lubricant.. prefect for the cradle the wedge travels up and down in on the splitter

It's the bomb. I use it on my loader, our cars and trucks before winter, etc.. Don't tell anyone, price continues to climb year after year.

I've also not heard of fluid film before. Lanolin based, so it should be decent for corrosion resistance. THANKS for the referral....I'll probably need to add some to my garage.

Hold out for a new rust free model. Mine lives indoors when not in use. Looks like new. Very proud of it.

I saw one like that about a year and half ago. The pump and coupling was rusted and there was rust on other small spots too. I'd pass on it.

I bought my TSC 22 ton like you describe it. Of course it did not bother me. About 4-5 years later its still just the same. Been through tons of cords. The 5hp briggs is on the same plug. Maybe 1 oil change. Hydraulic fluid is all the stuff that was in it - stock filter too. They're good tough units. The only thing I do is put a large plant saucer over the engine after use - this keeps rain off the goods.

I bought a cover for mine from Amazon. Fits the 22 with a cradle perfect.

My 35 ton from TSC has lived outside all of its life. Covered most of the time, but not always. It's got some rust here and there, but nothing to worry about.

That Fluid-Film looks like pretty good stuff!

BTW, once you have a few hours on it, you might want to change the oil out for Rotella T6. Turns over a LOT easier in cold weather. If you are going to be splitting in cold weather, consider filling it with regular transmission fluid instead of hydraulic fluid. It flows better at low temps.

Thanks for all the input. I believe I will just hold out until they are on sale again (was told middle of December by manager) and ask for slight discount due to rust or try to request a new shipped to the store. Or I might just go get the 22 ton DHT from lowes which will be shipped to the store and rust free.

Will do. I know it sounds picky but I try to keep and maintain my equipment as best i can and have a barn to keep it dry and safe. But the wife keeps looking at the 10 yard wide 6ft tall and 8 foot deep pile of black locust logs in the back corner of the property and wondering when it's gonna get done (along with other random logs I have laying around). Perfect time to convince her a log splitter is a must.
