want to install new insert but mold in the chimney...

Hi all,

I can't find any threads about this so here goes. I just received my new Century Heating CW2900 and can't wait to install it. However, after my sweep cut out the damper, inspected and cleaned a huge amount of dirt and organic matter (not creosote) from the the smoke shelf I realized that there was blueish mold on the bricks in the chimney.

What would the best course of action be to kill the mold prior to installing the liner and block off plate before I bring the stove in from the garage and install it?

It could be just from the chimney being damp on the inside. Does it have a cap?

A good hot fire will take care of the problem I would imagine.

It doesn't have a cap. We recently moved in and it looks like it has been without a cap for about 50 years.

So would you just burn a few hot fires in the open fireplace for a couple of nights?

That's what I was thinking too. It can't hurt.

I totally agree, even bleach watered down, and wipe up the mess the best you can. Then kill it with fire.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like I have a fun evening planned for tomorrow. At least I'm getting closer to install day.

Tonight I'll just try and drive whatever moisture out I can with a hot fire.
