We have an older Sweetheart stove and having an awful time sliding back draft gate(guessing it is called this). Very hard to move and need to use a board to really bang it. Any help on how to resolve??

Sounds like the oven bypass damper is being described? It could just be years of accumulated build-up that need to be cleaned out. This may need burner plates or a section of the top removed to get access to the mechanism.
