Here the black was first to go, then they moved on to the white. SE WI where we used to live has virtually no live ash left. Here in the Northwoods the black ash is as all dead but there's still some live white ash yet, but probably not for long...
Around here most of the white I see is live.

The good news is, once the older generation of ash are killed off, the next gen will fill in. I've got a dozen or so saplings growing. I had to kill a couple last summer. Misshaped and growing to close to the garage. They were bent and growing at a 70-75* angle. They had to go before they became a future issue. I have one, I think it's a black, with a 4-5'' base growing under some white pines. I observe that one regularly, guarding its safety. May take the 2 closet pines down early summer. Bunch of dead limb threats and the added sunlight will help promote some growth.

I lost all the mature white at the old place. There was a clump of 6 smaller ones that I treated every year once I discovered the infestation that did fine. I left a "maintenance guide" for the new owners noting that among other things hoping they will continue to treat them.

Burned pretty hot yesterday with below zero temps all morning. One full load first thing in the morning followed by two small hot fires in the afternoon to keep the cabin temps steady then another full load for overnight. Woke up to 68 in the cabin. Got a break today highs in the 20’s but back to teens for highs and below zero nights this weekend.

We’ve come to realize the little Panadero takes the edge off the whole end of this barn conversion if it runs 8 hrs+

Too cold inside, so it’s our cheap heat

1 chestnut/ 1 beech
Kindled with hazel/ white oak/ Siberian elm/holly

Got home a little early, warmed the shop up while I cut down a nuisance maple tree near the house; got myself 3 wheelbarrows of little maple logs for next year, no bigger than 6” or so.

Burning some oak, maple and a small piece of ash. She’s coaling up nice for the night.

CAT sitting at 1080, STT 500, shop 71, outside temp 20.

I had burned only three nights before I left for Boston Sunday. Mostly burned solar electrons in the mini split as it was warm enough during the day.

But I I instructed my wife how to start and run the stove before I left, and she successfully did so from Tuesday night on.
All red oak.
Last night I told her to add two splits of locust as it was going to be cold. She loaded at 7 pm.

I just came back home at 4.45 pm, right on time for a reload.
She loaded it well! 22 hrs (tho upstairs it was now down to 67 F).

Quite a few coals (locust and oak after all), so raked them to the front and put a split of pitch pine e/w. Had less than 1/4" on each side.
Running it high to burn down the coals, heat up the basement a bit as it had cooled down some, and to warm up the load of oak for tonight that I brought in from the garage.

Maybe another split of spruce after this, we'll see.

Dragon is feasting on some maple and ash. Going down the the lair to toss in a few more. Been feeding small to medium size loads.
!6'' splits, woodstove style, and in that 40 something inch deep belly.
Afterwards, I'll be posting in the work done thread. I've got some news to an earlier post of mine here. It is better situated over there though. See you soon.

A little early, but here’s the overnight load. Big chunk of ash by the front doors, then a piece of oak behind it, and a piece of maple, 1 mystery piece, and then a small piece of ash to plug the hole on the right. Hopefully she can burn for 12+hrs on low, but leaving the backup heat on too.

STT at 350, shop at 68, outside air temp 16. CAT at 900 and ramping up.

What is the top piece with the bark?
And what stove is that?

Load of spruce on top of today’s left over coals. I’ll be loading early tomorrow on the way out the door to work so spruce will work well until then. Tonight’s load took off FAST I couldn’t get a pic in time with the door open. At least with this cool snap the glass is semi opaque 😜

Kind of a weird day as after the morning load I had to unexpectedly be out of the house all day until about 6. Wife got home before me and house was chilly so she turned the heat up some. Came home had some coals left and tossed 4 or 5 pieces of cherry on to hold things over until now. Tonight is ash, oak and a little maple plus some cut offs. Took off fast before I could close the door as seen in the first picture!

Well, i found the pine split to be a bit sluggish: after closing the bypass it slowly burned slower and slower. It's bone dry 4 years old pine.

Turns out the cat surface was covered in black soot. So let the stove cool down enough, vacuumed it (easy dry soot came off right away), tested with a piece of spruce (closing the bypass did not lead to diminishing flame, instead it nicely went further ablaze).

So I think she may have forgotten to open the bypass once and stirred ashes a bit too much, leading to ash covering the cat - that then got covered with soot from the pitch pine.

Reload with oak after the spruce was sufficiently done (I'm tired and want to go to bed...). Not too stuffed but tomorrow it won't be so cold.

I'm letting the BK cool for a cat vacuum, fired up the PE for the first time this year. Doug Fir of course, a few splits and a bit of branch wood should get us through the night as it's just above freezing. I forgot how cute the firebox is on it. No wonder I couldn't get 30hr burns in it! (or 9) I would hope my glass was cleaner, had almost a year to shine it... It's pretty messy...[Hearth.com] What Is In Your Stove Right Now?

This mornings feed consists of scraps, as in 16'' long rounds. Small stuff that was stacked and left to sit for a few years. Score from a few months ago. They didn't want it, so I snatched up almost 2 cord. There are some bigger rounds of 6-10'' that I won't just toss in. That size I don't trust the MC. Small stuff is all missing its bark. Soft maple and ash as the bigger rounds with bark tell the tale. Little stuff has a nice ring to them. Some of it is very stick like. I wasn't going to complain with 3 good pickup loads.

Ole girl has been chewing on this small stuff all morning. Warmer out today. I'll be going outside after the girl gets back, so I can post in the work done thread. LOL

Last night's oak wasn't done but I have to go to a baseball thing with my son. So some maple uglies and shorties to get me to the evening reload.

Afternoon refill with some ugliest and punky stuff, shops sitting at 68, warmed up to 37 outside. Good weather for splitting and stacking wood!
That was my ideaas well, move some more wood up. The wife had other ideas. I've been hanging Christmas decorations inside since mid morning for a party next Saturday.

17 degrees. Got home from shopping and the house was still warm from the morning load of cherry and ash with light coals left, so I cleaned the glass and removed some ash. Load of some aspen, cherry and ash going. Mandatory post glass cleaning photo included 😜.

I’ve been outside splitting and stacking for a while, but got sucked into that last weekend.🤣

This mystery wood is coaling up nice, must have stumbled into some oak, hickory or elm (it’s been pretty stringing):
