Nice looking load of oak, shame to waste it on a mild night!!
That’s all I’ll have for a while. All I have for this season is oak, hickory, beech and a little ash. I could probably burn some of the black cherry and other stash of ash I have but was going to give that another year to season, though it’s probably dry by now (been 2 summers). I have some white oak too, but probably going to give that another year too (been 2 summers seasoning). A majority of this season will be oak and hickory. Don’t have much “shoulder season” wood. Would love to find some maple but has been slim Pickens for that. I have All good stuff. Down to around 32, so not warm but not cold either: plenty to keep the house warm low and slow

1st world problem buddy! 🤣 I guess I’ll be in that boat next year, then again there seems to be an endless supply of dead ash around here.

Very little, if any solar today; we’ve got a big wet storm sitting over us through the night
Our cheap elec hrs are 1400-1600 and when the elec heaters go off, it’s just a bit too chilly inside

I have lots of junk hazel which burns pretty clean; typical split of chestnut lower front

Nice pup! I had a lab/pointer mix who would love the stove. I miss her dearly.

I'm listening to the very loud snoring of a French Bulldog asleep in front of the stove behind me, right now. ;lol

Haven't seen the Boston Terror since 6:30am, but I assume she's asleep on the warm stone hearth in front of the other stove at the other end of the house.

As to what's in the stove, it was a mix of oak, hickory, ash, and cherry, randomly grabbed off the wagon last night. Each stove was loaded half full, as we're still seeing warm afternoons here.

Still a can of damprid...

I did take 3 splits out of my bay for this year. 2 red oak and one black locust. Did 12 MC content measurements - not because I need to do that (3/4 year old stuff, and using my pickaroon to wrangle them out of the stack I already knew they're dry, and then I dropped them and the church bells rang, nice sound). I got one measurement of 16%, all the rest was lower.
So I'm all good to go, as expected, once I reconnect the stove pipe.

Sunny weather here, upper 40s-lower 50s at night, 60s during the day. An hour or two of mini split heat during the early morning, and when the sun hits the (uninsulated single pane) sunroom it gets 85 there quickly, so when the temp rises there , I open the slider to our main living area, and that's enough to get the place to 73 or so for the rest of the day.

Dipping into the 40's as I write this. Ok and maple chunks to start things off

It's the time that those flames look appealing to me.
But I think I may have to wait another month..

Really? I started sometime around the middle of the month, 10/12 maybe? You're north of me!

Only trouble here is that I usually clean the pipes from the prior year after the first new fire of each year. It's may way of ensuring I don't bring down a live nest of yellow jackets, after the pipe has been sitting unused all summer.

But so far this year, we've had a fire every single night, since starting up. It hasn't left any time for a cleaning.

I'm (slightly less than) half a mile from the (salt) water. North shore here.
That moderates temps.
I also am quite past break even on my solar panels, and heat with a mini split to use those free electrons (and I have about a year's worth of surplus kWh in the bank). Generally I heat with the mini splits when it's above 40-45 during the day. Depends a bit on how cold it gets during the night, but my mini splits can handle my home down to at least 15 F, so it's just that they're less efficient then.
I only burn a tad less than 2 cords per year.

My stove is empty and chimney still needs to be cleaned. I am still switching between heat and AC. I only put the heat on right in the morning. House is usually down at 66. It is 70 today and low will be 50. Probably won't have my first fire until December.

I've had to scrap ice off a car windshield a half dozen times already, this month. So, I don't know what the temperature was, but I guess it must be 32F or lower.

We often see frost on the lawn or cars, or puddles in the driveway frozen over, when the iPhone weather app is telling us the current temperature is 37F. I don't know why, but it's basically routine here, not just a rare occurrence. We must live in some weird cold spot that weather.com doesn't detect when mapping gradients over our area.

I know temperature can change quite a bit with elevation, so that's probably it. We live on a hillside, directly across the valley from a ski resort, so the elevation changes quite a bit over just 1/2 mile around here... at least by eastern Pennsylvania standards. It ain't exactly the Rockies. ;lol

That is because the app temp (or forecast) is always 5-6 ft up from the ground. Temps at the ground can be up to 10 degrees colder than at 6 ft.

Last nights burn lost its luster around 2:30 am, as my heat kicked on and around 7;30 the stove was 130 deg and no coals.

So for my second overnight burn I’m putting some bigger oak and ash in. Here the coal rake and load, if anyone’s burning a PE Summit or Alderlea T6 and is getting 12hr burns I’m all ears.
